Summary: NMSU Grants was established as a branch of New Mexico State University in 1968 through the cooperative efforts of New Mexico State University and Grants Municipal Schools. As a two-year branch community college, NMSU Grants serves the local communities in Cibola and McKinley counties, including the Pueblos of Acoma, Laguna, and Zuni, as well as Tohajiilee, San Mateo, San Rafael, Cubero, the City of Grants, and the Village of Milan.

Classification Summary:New Mexico State University Grants Community College is seeking applicants for full-time Assistant Professor of Biology. This is a tenure track nine-month faculty position located at the Grants campus. The individual will be responsible for teaching 15 credit hours per semester (Fall and Spring) to include Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Cellular & Human Biology. Teaching load may include day, night, offsite and possibly weekend classes. Responsibilities include maintaining attendance, academic, and student records, as well as posting and maintaining office hours as per NMSU policy; service on college committees; curriculum development; outcomes assessment; program recruitment; scholarly & creative work (related to teaching field or area of expertise); professional development other areas of service and scholarship, as appropriate.

Classification Standard Duties:• Teach 15 credit hours each fall and spring semester per NMSU Administrative Rules and Procedures.

• Prepare and teach lecture and lab courses including but not limited to Anatomy & Physiology I and II; Microbiology; and Cellular and Molecular Biology.

• Teach classes in a variety of delivery formats including day, evening, hybrid, and online courses as well as at off campus locations.

• Support program functions such as textbook selection, curriculum development, and other program needs requiring faculty input.

• Teach and support the development of specialty courses (non-credit based options, combo classes, or accelerated courses)

• Provide regular and predictable access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.

• Instruct, assist, and motivate students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed feedback on assignments and discussions.

• Advise and assist students in planning an educational pathway and selecting courses, and when necessary refer students to appropriate student services for assistance.

• Participate as an active member of working committees regarding instruction, college-wide and program assessment, student matters and/or college related concerns.

• Work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and be a positive contributing member of the campus community.

• Represent and promote the Natural Science Program at system-wide and state meetings as well as in the community.

• Design, implement, and document assessment tasks for the Natural Science program.

• Maintain positive and effective communications with students, faculty, administration and staff.

• Foster a flexible, healthy learning environment with respect for student diversity.

• Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth, development, and conduct.

• Other duties as agreed to with Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree in Biology or a Master's degree in a related field with 18 graduate hours in the Biology discipline.

• 2 Years full-time teaching experience including labs.

• Experience teaching online courses.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to teach Biology and another natural science area (Astronomy, Environmental Science, Physics, Geology and/or Nutrition).

• Experience teaching nursing prerequisite science and lab courses such as Anatomy & Physiology I and II; Microbiology; and Cellular and Molecular Biology.

• Experience teaching at the community college level.

• Experience teaching online using the CANVAS learning management system.

• Demonstrated knowledge of the role of the community college in education.

• Experience implementing innovative teaching methods to improve student success and retention such as flipped instruction, coordinated studies, team teaching, active learning, or computer-aided instruction.

• Experience working with students from diverse academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Environment: Work is normally performed indoors.

Physical Effort: Light physical effort. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
