INTRODUCTION

The University of Connecticut (UConn) is pleased to invite applications for a one-year, annually renewable non-tenure track faculty position in the Department of Communication at the rank of Assistant Professor in Residence. The position will be based on our Stamford campus and will begin on August 23, 2024. This hire is part of a strategic initiative to offer the Communication major in its entirety on the Stamford campus, capitalizing on the academic and professional opportunities posed by its proximity to New York City. The Stamford major was launched in 2022 and now enrolls over 100 students. On the whole, the Department of Communication has 19 tenure-stream faculty members and 5 Assistant Professors-in-Residence across two campuses and has approximately 35 graduate students and 1000 undergraduate majors. The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate level and be capable of teaching a broad range of courses in the department including those in marketing, advertising, and public relations, as well as those in their area of specialization. The teaching load will be seven courses across the academic year - three courses for one semester and four courses for the other semester. The ability and desire to supervise our newly chartered chapter of PRSSA is highly desired. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the commitment to, and support of, diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Earned Ph.D. in Communication (ABD candidates will be considered with the expectation that the PhD is completed before the start date).
  • Ability to take an empirical, data-driven approach to the study of Communication.
  • Interest in working with a diverse student body.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Professional experience in marketing, public relations, and/or advertising.
  • Teaching experience that includes non-traditional, first-generation, and/or historically underrepresented student populations.
APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, annually renewable, non-tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2024. This one-year contract may be renewed or lead to a multi-year contract in the future based on funding and performance. This position does not lead to permanent academic tenure, though the University has a separate promotional ladder for non-tenure stream faculty (see https://provost.uconn.edu/faculty-and-staff-resources/promotion-tenure-reappointment/ ). Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
