Pratt & Whitney, a recognized leading producer of the world's most advanced commercial and military turbine engines, is seeking a highly motivated manufacturing engineering professional to join the Core Manufacturing Engineering organization. The Closed-Door Manufacturing (CDM) Process Engineer will support enterprise-wide deployment of Closed-Door Machining. Elements of CDM include elimination of program stops, elimination of manual gaging, utilization of process control tools, tooling & cutter path optimization, machine tool monitoring and process modeling.

The selected candidate will support projects on-site at any one of the following Pratt & Whitney sites with additional travel required as necessary (approximately 20-30% of the time):
  • East Hartford, CT
  • Middletown, CT
  • North Berwick, ME
  • Columbus, GA


Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop CAM based solutions for complex and difficult to machine aerospace components.
  • Integrate closed loop methodology through on-machine probing and data collection/analysis to enable process control while reducing operator intervention.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives through improved part processing using efficient CAM technology and innovative mistake proofing techniques resulting in elimination/reduction of scrap rework repair.
  • Provide analytical solutions to optimize CNC programs and machine tool capabilities using machining analysis and process modeling software tools.
  • Ability to work from data such as solid models, part, and tool drawings, including part models with PMI.
  • Advanced knowledge of cutting tool applications and design capability for complex part designs and challenging high temperature materials.
  • Mentoring/coaching/training of module center process MEs in CDM methods and tools.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Material Sciences or related field with a minimum of 10+ years' prior relevant experience required. Aerospace or Automotive experience preferred.
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 10+ years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
  • 5+ years'of experience programming lathes, mill-turns and multi-axis machining centers using CAD/CAM applications.
  • Requires advanced level knowledge of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) controls, machining techniques and machine tool capabilities including machine/fixture/part dynamic stiffness to design NC programs resulting in robust machining processes.
  • Proven experience with graphic programming, part modeling, program simulation and process modeling softwares including but not limited to Siemens NX, Vericut, ThirdWave and CutPro.
  • Familiarization with process monitoring, data collection and adaptive methods.
  • Experience in closed loop machining and advanced programming techniques.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Material Sciences or related field with a minimum of 7+ years work experience . Aerospace or Automotive experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Understanding of Closed Loop Manufacturing (CLM), Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), Numerical Control (NC) programming.
