Job Summary:

The Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts (CPCA) Costume Shop Manager, under the direction of the Director of CPCA Production and Theater Department Chair, is responsible for the supervision/management of all costume work completed in the CPCA Costume Shops, along with oversight of all costume staff duties, and student workers that support CPCA Theater and Opera production costumes. Provides leadership, and management of all CPCA production costuming and must provide clear strategies in costume planning and implementation while working directly with Theater and Opera to ensure their costuming vision and needs are met at the highest quality possible for all performances. In addition, the Costume Shop areas (Tomlinson and Mitten Shops) serve as key educational environments for students. The Costume Shop Manager provides pedagogical costume practice through mentoring and training for all assigned students working in the costume shops and running crews for the CPCA Theater/Opera productions to give students hands-on costuming skills and experiences. Oversees and manages all assigned costume purchases, rental and construction needs of all costumes for CPCA Theater and Opera productions. Performs other duties as assigned

Required Education & Experience:

B.A. or B.F.A. in Theater with at least three years of direct management of a costume shop environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Essential Functions of Position:
  • Under the direction of the CPCA Director of Production, is responsible for all aspects of CPCA Theater and Opera production costumes; works with all production staff, directors, department chairs to create a strategic costume plan for 12 performances and ensure all theater and opera costume needs are met and quality costume work is provided.
  • Manages the maintenance of costume shop (in both Tomlinson and Mitten Hall) , equipment and costume related production areas as needed.
  • Demonstrates excellent time management, organizational skills, and clear strategic planning with all appropriate Theater and Opera chairs, production staff, faculty, staff, students ensuring that all CPCA costume needs are met creatively, strategically and on time for each production.
  • As directed by the CPCA Director of Production, trains/oversees all costume staff and student workers to create a viable working costume shops that supports all theater and opera productions.
  • Manages assigned costume budgets, both for productions and R&I (Repair & Inventory)
  • Trains/mentors students in the Costume Shop services/activities, safety protocols, tool, and machinery handling, and provide work-ready skills in all aspects of production costuming, wardrobe, and maintenance. This includes preserving professional behavior in providing this supervision for both Theater and Opera while creating a collaborative working environment upholding the academic mission of the CPCA and Temple University.
  • Provides strong leadership in Costuming planning and strategies, working directly with Theater and Opera to ensure quality costuming is provided for all productions.
  • Responsible for the collective costume teamwork to provide full costume support for all CPCA Theater and Opera productions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
