PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

To plan and manage the front-end functions to promote sales, achieve profit margins and labor goals; ensure a positive shopping experience for customers and a safe and positive working environment for associates.

NATURE AND SCOPE

Emphasis in this position is on coordinating, directing and assisting with daily supervision of front-end policies and procedures, cashier performance, labor control and customer relations. Primary challenge is to positively affect customer service levels and department labor, and productivity factors through efficient operation of the front end. This position is responsible for providing effective training, development and work direction for department associates. The position requires the ability to encourage individual and group effort toward department objectives, on-going customer interaction, providing prompt, courteous and accurate service, judgment/decision making, social skills/verbal interaction, reading, writing, math, computer skills, register/scanner operation, reading, light lifting, and standing. Position functions and work hours may vary according to business needs. The Store Manager provides assignments and work direction.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

1. Assist customers and ensure proper service levels and courtesy from all associates

- Greet and thank customers

- Answer or refer questions and responds to customer requests as needed

- Bring customers to location of item

- Perform price checks

- Respond to customer assistance needs/calls promptly

- Monitor and ensure prompt, courteous, and accurate customer relations

Functional Requirements

Frequent: Physical - lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs., equipment operation (scanner, register, check approval machine, coupon machine, intercom), reaching, standing and turning

Mental - judgment/decision making, social skills/verbal interaction, memorization, reading, writing and math

Occasional: Physical - lifting/carrying over 50 lbs., equipment operation

(calculator) squatting, stooping/bending and walking

2. Develop effective daily/weekly work plan based on sales projections, budgeted labor goals and previous operating results

- Analyze sales and labor projections to determine scheduling needs

- Write schedules using scheduling program, weekly management report and targeted check stand profile

- Monitor plan-to-actual reporting and make front end coverage adjustments to accommodate customer volume and store projection

- Schedule for best customer service while maximizing productivity

- Determine work priorities and establish work lists in order to consistently maintain adequate department conditions

- Communicate with Store Director/Assistant Store Director concerning ongoing department status, including successes, opportunities and planning

- Participate in weekly store meetings

3. Supervise the front end functions to ensure positive customer relations and accurate, prompt checkout

- Effectively communicate department priorities, policies and procedures and delegate

accordingly

- Ensure minimal waiting time for each customer

- Ensure correct product handling and scanning techniques

- Ensure proper handling of all forms of tender and coupons

- Ensure proper handling of voids, refunds, and exchanges

- Ensure price checks and scan error forms completed as necessary

- Authorize check cashing and ensure standards

- Ensure front end cleanliness and organization to include filling bags and keeping front

end clear of shopping carts

- Administer store audit policies

- Ensure proper etiquette is used for telephone and intercom calls

- Ensure adherence to company policy including the handling tobacco, alcohol and lottery transactions

Frequent: Physical - lifting/carrying to 20 lbs., pushing/pulling up to 20 force pounds, equipment operation, (register, telephone, intercom), walking and standing

4. Supervise the service center functions

- Ensure reporting and auditing practices are conducted accurately

- Report discrepancies and investigate or reconciles as required

- Ensure cleanliness and organization of the service center

- Ensure proper etiquette is used for telephone and intercom calls

- Ensure adherence to company policy including the handling tobacco, alcohol and lottery transactions

5. Monitor tracking and performance reports and takes appropriate action

- Review weekly management report, store grading and scanning reports

- Review voids and refunds for proper authorization and handling

- Check accuracy of bookkeeping reports and deposits; reconciles discrepancies

- Monitor documentation of customer feedback regarding front end performance

6. Manage department personnel functions

- Monitors department staffing and makes hiring recommendations

- Trains department personnel in proper techniques and procedures

- Conducts probationary and regular performance reviews

- Recommends employees for advancement or special recognition

- Provides individual and group guidance and encouragement toward department objectives

- Ensure adherence to company policies and procedures

- Recommends and administers corrective actions as appropriate; seeks direction from store manager and human resources as required

7. Supervise department safety and sanitation programs

- Ensure associates are trained in the proper use of equipment, maintenance and sanitation standards, proper lifting and all related safety rules and procedures

- Ensure associates are trained in appropriate scanning techniques and ergonomic methods

- Ensure associates know and are able to implement emergency procedures

- Ensure no one under 18 years of age operates hazardous equipment

- Report all accidents to store management and/or completes incident reports as required

- Conduct department sanitation inspections

- Ensure clean, organized and safe conditions

- Ensure adherence to all safety and sanitation policies and procedures

8. Perform as Manager on Duty supervising entire store as needed

- Monitor overall store conditions

- React to needs of the business

- Ensure high level of customer service throughout the store

9. Observe standards and procedures regarding store security and confidentiality

- Ensure proper authorization for admittance to security areas

- Ensure security tape applied as necessary for proof of purchase
