SUMMARY OF WORK:

The Radiation Unit oversees theX-Ray Programunder the North Dakota Radiation Control Program within the Division of Waste Management. The X-Ray Program conducts activities associated with machine produced ionizing radiation. A major responsibility of this position is the registration and inspection of X-ray machine facilities, equipment, operators and radiation service providers.

As an Environmental Scientist in the X-Ray Program you will be responsible for registering X-ray machines facilities, machines, and service providers through North Dakota; conduct inspections of X-ray machines and facilities to assure patient and public safety; conduct medical physics audits and review shielding requirements; respond to complaints and allegations; assist with emergency response; and complete reports and conduct follow-up with facilities.

Travel within North Dakota including overnight stays is required with this position. Out-of-state training and meetings may occur occasionally.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. DEQ will not provide sponsorships.

Applicants must have a valid North Dakota driver's license.

DEQ is attempting to fill this position at the Environmental Scientist II level but reserves the right to underfill the position as an Environmental Scientist I.

To be considered for an Environmental Scientist II, you must have a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, or radiologic science and one year of ionizing radiation experience or an associate degree in radiologic science and two years of ionizing radiation experience.

To be considered for an Environmental Scientist I, you must have a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, or radiologic science or an associate degree in radiologic science and one year of ionizing radiation experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Work experience with X-ray machine regulations, requirements, and procedures, interpreting rules and regulations and providing guidance on policies and procedures for achieving and maintaining compliance, experience applying health physics principals, serving in a leadership or regulatory roles, and/or computer skills using databases and spreadsheets is helpful but not required.
