Description

Under direct supervision, operates various construction equipment and tools to construct, repair, and maintain the Town's water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

Examples of Duties
  • Cleans, repairs, and maintains utility lines and services via operation of various equipment.
  • Operates, repairs, and maintains various equipment, vehicles, and tools.
  • Excavates trenches and ditches for the installation of new mains and/or service lines, involving hand shoveling and raking.
  • Operates sewer cleaning equipment, as needed, to clean mains, services, manholes, and spills.
  • Loads and unloads trucks, tankers, and other transport containers.
  • Conducts daily inspections and preventative maintenance measures of vehicles, equipment, and tools, to include: washing, checking safe and proper operation, and servicing; checking fluid levels lubrication, point check, tire pressure check; cleaning filters, screens, and windshields; checking operation and presence of all lights, horns, braking systems, wipers, road hazard equipment, securing loads, and other items for inspection of road worthiness and as required by the Department of Transportation prior to placing equipment on public roads.
  • Operates, repairs, and maintains various light to heavy equipment and vehicles, to include: tractors, mowers, skid steer loaders, front end loaders, backhoes, tracked excavators, sewer cleaning equipment, heavy trenchers, bucket trucks, augers, jackhammers, dump trucks, other 1 ton to 5 ton vehicles, etc.; operates and maintains various hand tools.
  • Works safely, especially when working in close proximity to high-speed vehicle traffic areas, along medians, and rights-of-way.
  • Trains other employees in the operation, repair, and safety techniques of working on and with light to heavy construction equipment.
  • Identifies and informs supervisor of potential hazards, liability exposures, problem areas, public inquiries of the general public, and the status of work activities.
  • Adheres to Town, departmental, and safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs the duties of a Utility Maintenance Worker and assists other departments, as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
  • Must possess a valid Class B Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or be able to complete and pass the written test for a valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with proper endorsements and without restriction "L" within 90 days of hire. Proof of scheduled driving test appointment with the Texas Department of Public Safety presented to supervisor within 90 days from passing the written exam is required. Driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.
EDUCATION:
  • A Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class C Water Distribution Operator or Wastewater Collection II license is preferred.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • One year of experience in utility maintenance and equipment operation, to include backhoes, excavators, front loaders, and sewer line flushing trucks, is required.
Must submit to and pass a post-offer drug test and thorough background checks (including criminal history).

  • Skills in operation of heavy to light construction equipment, vehicles, small power tools, and equipment in a safe and proper manner.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and make competent decisions.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work well under pressure and stress.
  • Ability to respond within 30 minutes to an on-call or emergency callback.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
  • Ability to talk, read, see, walk, hear, and follow oral and written directions.
  • Possession of sufficient hand, foot, and eye coordination to operate various types of light to heavy equipment.
  • Ability to operate maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to exert and lift up to 100 lbs. of equipment several times per day, shovel, crawl, bend, kneel, climb on and off equipment, and operate vibrating equipment.
  • Ability to work indoors, outdoors, underground, in confined spaces, and in trenches; on level, slippery, sloping, unstable and muddy terrain; and under noisy conditions.
  • Ability to work in adverse environmental conditions, including inclement weather, such as rain, sleet, snow, sun exposure, dust/mist and under hazardous conditions with street traffic, fume odor, dust/mist, chemical, toxic waste hazards, and other solid waste substances.
