Norfolk State University's (NSU) Department of Visual and Performing Arts Drama & Theatre Division, invites applicants for a full-time 9-month Drama and Theatre position in the discipline of Costume Design and technology; the selected candidate shall begin August 2024. The position remains open until filled.
The term faculty member is expected to demonstrate excellence through teaching and maintain a scholarly body of knowledge within the discipline. The successful candidate's primary responsibilities of this opportunity are teaching in the discipline of Costume Design,
Costume History, Makeup, Intro to Theatre, and/or other areas as qualified, serving as the Costume Shop Manager. This position will have 50% release time to support the NSU Theatre Company. Candidates are expected to have experience with costume design & technology in collegiate and/or professional theatrical productions using pattern-making, drafting, draping, cutting, stitching, hair and wig styling, theatrical makeup application, and crafts & accessories construction. Knowledge of OSHA and industry safety compliance rules and extensive knowledge of the safe use of equipment are expected of all candidates. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain high levels of professional development, research, and creative activities and service. The successful candidate will assist with the servicing and inventory tracking of all costume shop equipment, and materials, and supervise and train student workers in costume and makeup technology. This position will require the candidate to be available for student supervision as needed during evening and weekend rehearsals and performances.

Minimum Qualifications

M.F.A. in Costume Design & Technology or related field.
Experience and/or evidence of costume design and construction and design and construction of accessories and wigs.
Dedication to teaching, research, and service

Additional Considerations

Ability to lift and transport equipment and materials as needed.
Membership in professional organizations such as IATSE, USA, USITT, etc.
Earned, current OSHA 30-Hour Training Program Certificate & DOL Card.
Proficiency and working knowledge in a second area of focus in theatrical production and/or design.
Excellent leadership and personnel management skills with a collaborative and open attitude.
