About the job : Under the general direction of the Deputy Chief, Fleet (Fire), the Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) performs a wide variety of mechanic al work; acts as lead person. Construct, repair and maintain automotive and heavy maintenance and construction equipment; may instruct and lead or direct the work of apprentices, helpers Service Assistants (Automotive), or other employees, inmates, wards or resident workers; and do other related work.

Must be willing to work overtime. The work sometimes involves travel and could require extended periods of time away from home.

  • The movement of certified equipment and vehicles requires a Commercial Driver's License with endorsements. The incumbent must have as a minimum, a California Commercial Driver's License of Class B with Tank endorsement, and Air Brake endorsement. Required prior to employment.
  • Inspects equipment to locate and determine the extent of necessary repairs and the corrective action required. Maintains and repairs automobiles, trucks, tractors, pumps, air compressors, diesel and gasoline engines, and similar equipment.
  • Performs repairs throughout the state during major incidents, including large repair campaigns, facility maintenance, and vehicle movement. Mechanical duties would involve diagnosis and tune-up work on diesel and gasoline engines, reline and perform brake repairs on vehicles with both air and hydraulic brakes, repair and overhaul fire pumps and other general mechanical repairs to fire apparatus. The work sometimes involves travel and could require extended periods of time away from home.
  • Rebuilds and tests various types of fire pumps. Pump tests all new fire pumps prior to release to assignees. Maintains an inventory of pump parts and components for shop use and field requisition.
  • Constructs new special equipment or modifies existing equipment including body frames and running gear; makes installation or repairs to special equipment.
Commercial Drivers License A or B - Pay Differential (34) may be eligible for Heavy Equipment Mechanics candidates of Bargain unit 12 who have verified proof of their Class B with Tank endorsement and Air Brake endorsement. This differential is a 5% rate.

Working Conditions
TELEWORK : This position supports the day-to-day business operations for the Fire & Rescue branch which is handled in the office. This is not considered a hybrid telework position.

CDL - CLASS B : The movement of certified equipment and vehicles requires a Commercial Driver's License with endorsements. The incumbent must have as a minimum, a California Commercial Driver's License of Class B with Tank endorsement and Air Brake endorsement. Required prior to employment.

DMV PULL PROGRAM : This position is required to have a valid California Driver's License (CDL) and participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Employer Pull Notice Program, as outlined on the duty statement.

Physical Demands : This position must have the ability to work under high levels of stress and the ability to make quick, accurate decisions based on agency policies and procedures. The position must be able to work well with others. The position must be able to work varied shifts and overtime hours as needed depending on emergency and non-emergency incident activity.

    Heavy Equipment Mechanic - Minimum Qualifications:

    • Commercial Driver's License is required before hire date. (HEM classification general requirement)
    • The movement of certified equipment and vehicles requires a Commercial Driver's License with endorsements. The incumbent must have as a minimum, a California Commercial Driver's License of Class B with Tank endorsement and Air Brake endorsement. Required prior to employment. (Cal OES requirement)

    Either Pattern I
    Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a gas and diesel-powered truck mechanic, or a heavy construction equipment mechanic. (Apprentices who are within six months of completing their apprenticeship program may be admitted to the examination, but they must present evidence of completion of a recognized apprenticeship before they may be appointed.)

    O r Pattern II
    Four years of varied mechanical experience on gas and diesel powered trucks or heavy construction equipment. An Associate of Arts Degree in Heavy Equipment Maintenance, Diesel Mechanics, or Heavy Equipment Mechanics or a certificate of completion from an accredited community college or equivalent degree or certificate approved by the California Superintendent of Public Instruction under the provisions of California Education Code Section 94310(b) may be substituted for two years of the required experience. (Students who are within six months of completing their degree will be admitted to the examination but must present evidence of completion prior to appointment.)

    Or Pattern III
    Three years performing the duties of a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Apprentice in the California state service, at least two years of which shall have included experience on gasoline and diesel-powered heavy construction or high way maintenance equipment.
