What Your Job Will Be Like

The Future Nuclear Deterrent Systems Engineering department, Org 0231, is seeking motivated Systems Engineers to help execute a Rapid System Integration project under the 00200-led initiative utilizing Sandia designed and developed advanced reentry vehicles. This role offers an exhilarating opportunity to work in a dynamic and high-energy environment. You will be at the forefront of a thrilling mission to seamlessly incorporate a cutting-edge system prototype within an incredibly tight deadline. Utilizing state-of-the-art facilities that set us apart from the rest, you will join a close-knit team of seasoned experts. Together, we will revolutionize the future of Deterrence.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Dive into a complex and challenging Models Based System Engineering (MBSE) environment, where each day presents new and exciting tasks.
  • Develop and analyze requirement, functional, logical, and physical architectures, contributing to the design and implementation of cutting-edge systems.
  • Take charge of system verification and validation, ensuring that systems meet the highest standards of quality and performance.
  • Collaborate with sponsors and internal partners to develop interface control documents, fostering effective communication and alignment.
  • Serve as the systems Point of Contact for component teams, working together to develop requirements, verification, and test strategies, as well as conducting technical change impact analysis.
  • Implement innovative approaches for Digital Engineering, advancing standard methodologies in Systems Engineering on active developmental programs.
  • Contribute to the development of groundbreaking technologies for national defense programs, pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

Due to the nature of work, successful candidate must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or relevant STEM field plus five years of relevant experience
  • Experience performing Systems Engineering work such as requirements development, functional architecture development, physical architecture development, and performance verification.
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance or equivalent.


Qualifications We Desire

  • Knowledge of SysML, MagicDraw Cameo, Model Based Systems Engineering practices and tools
  • Knowledge and experience with:
    • Engineering design from concept through demonstration
    • Configuration management processes and tools
    • Integrating tools in a Digital Engineering (DE) ecosystem
  • Proficient communication, including presentations to peers, management, and customers
  • Ability to work successfully within a multi-disciplinary team, partner effectively across organizations, as well as understand and work across a diverse set of technology areas
  • Experience conducting system trade study analysis and documentation
  • Demonstrated ability in missiles, flight vehicles, missile defense systems or other areas of Aerospace Systems design and program experience
  • Knowledge of and user-experience the Nuclear Weapons qualification process.
  • Knowledge of and user-experience non-destructive evaluation technologies.
  • Knowledge of and user-experience with Aging and Lifetimes/Enhanced Surveillance activities.
  • Component or System-level design trades experience.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in Agile product development.


About Our Team

Organization 0231 is part of the ND Future Weapon System and Special Projects group and provides diverse engineering expertise to support high priority, short-turn projects for Sandia's Nuclear Deterrence mission. We partner with other design, testing, and production groups across the laboratories to develop designs that meet customer needs and deliver on time. Our organization is flexible and adaptable to address a variety of requests from NNSA and DoD in initiating and executing programs through sound systems engineering principles. We anticipate future deterrence needs and mitigate technical surprise on all timescales of interest to National Security.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
