Global Trade Compliance Specialist

About the job:

As a Global Trade Compliance Specialist, you will be responsible in supporting the global trade compliance operations and partnering with the free trade agreements and classification team.

  • The role is responsible for the trade-related requirements and oversight of global harmonized tariff schedule classification, export control classification, free trade agreement application and interpreting applicable regulations and procedures.
  • Will also be responsible for the cross-functional coordination involved in the product qualification process to ensure compliance with regulations and internal policies, including, but not limited to, programs related to import/export declarations, Free Trade Agreement assessment and certifications, and duty drawback.
  • The role is responsible for staying informed about new sanctions, third party due diligence, as well as training and partnering with the trade compliance team globally. The specialist will play a critical role in the day-to-day functioning of the Company’s global and regional trade compliance programs.
  • This position is in Houston (Energy Corridor), TX and reports to the Sr Manager of Global Trade Compliance.

In your future role as a Global Trade Compliance Specialist, you will:

  • Be responsible for sanctions, third party due diligence, as well as training, trade compliance functions globally.
  • Support execution of corporate compliance standards, processes, and procedures at the direction of the Sr Manager Global Trade Compliance.
  • Track and identify changes in trade regulations that impact compliance processes and procedures, perform gap analysis against current or new regulations, and advise possible solutions.
  • Proactively support the US duty drawback program, extracting and analyzing reports, collect documentation to support audits for the filings.
  • Delivery of the Global Trade objectives aiming to standardize and simplify processes and procedures. Identifying and delivering local projects focused on compliance and cost reduction opportunities.
  • Will play a critical role in the day-to-day functioning of the Company’s global and regional trade compliance programs relating to import/export classification, documentation, valuation, country of origin assessment, dual-use export controls, temporary imports, and royalties.
  • Support customs audits carried out in the markets which require regional/global support; be prepared to liaise with Customs Authorities where necessary.
  • Assess, draft, and submit export license applications to the US Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security (“BIS”) using SNAP-R
  • Oversee assignment of Export Control Classification Numbers (“ECCN”) and Schedule B, and perform classifications when necessary.
  • Determine license exceptions and licensing requirements for shipments and releases in SAP GTS 4 Hana Legal control module.
  • Review and disposition third parties subject to denied and restricted party screening.
  • Develop and conduct training activities pertaining to export compliance and trade sanctions.
  • Conduct audits, assessments, spot checks, and / or health checks of various aspects of the global trade export operations program.
  • As needed, assist in third party due diligence and the ongoing screening of customers, distributors, agents and other third parties
  • Support on managing trade blocks in SAP GTS 4 Hana.
  • Partner and collaborate with free trade and classification team
  • Perform other duties assigned as needed.


We believe you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent Trade Compliance experience.
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant trade compliance experience is required.
  • Work experience in Customs regulations, Harmonized Tariff Classification, and Free Trade Agreements and EAR regulations
  • Knowledge or experience with ERPs and/or Trade Compliance systems, in particular SAP, SAP GTS 4 Hana and SNAPR for US export license applications.
  • Understand the Harmonized Tariff Schedule, with major emphasis of Chapters 28 to 38 for chemicals and chemical products.
  • Experience in ECCN classification and determining export license requirements.
  • Experience with certificates of origin for both non-preferential treatment and preferential treatment under one or more Free Trade Agreements
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • CTPAT and/or AEO experience a plus

This is a permanent position on a full-time basis, reporting to the IM Manager, IM Services based out of Mexico City, Mexico.
