UW Facilities manages the University's buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. Maintenance & Construction (M&C) is responsible for general maintenance, repair, and renovations of all University of Washington (UW) main campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds, as well as logistics, moving, and disposal of surplus equipment and furniture.

Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for an Irrigation Mechanic (Maintenance Mechanic 2). Under the direction of the supervisor and lead, perform skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, remodeling and construction of irrigation systems, grounds, machinery, facilities, and equipment, specifically in the Grounds department.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform skilled work in the installing, operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, monitoring, repairing, remodeling, and construction of irrigation systems, grounds, machinery, facilities, and/or equipment.

• Inspect, repair, install and maintain physical facilities and irrigation systems requiring skilled electrical, mechanical, plumbing and trades work.

• Manage and control the computer-based irrigation management system for irrigation water use on all campus plantings, athletic fields and nursery operations.

• Activate, repair and test campus irrigation systems for use during the irrigation season. Winterize campus irrigation systems at the end of the season to prevent cold weather damage.

• Design, install and repair irrigation and water management systems including delivery systems, piping, control, and metering and sensor devices.

• Troubleshoot and repair central control system components.

• Inspect irrigation construction projects during installation to ensure satisfactory compliance with design, instruction, and safe work practices.

• Order and stock irrigation controls, valves, and related parts for repair and installation of electrical, mechanical, electronic and pneumatic control systems.

• Develop and program complex irrigation schedules utilizing stand-alone and central control systems, to optimize water conservation and achieve plant water requirements.

• Monitor and record water flow for the local public utilities and perform water audits.

• Work in cooperation with the local utilities on water conservation and rebate programs.

• Review and maintain irrigation system maps, database and repair information.

• Conduct layout and job planning on routine maintenance and construction projects, and read and interpret blueprints. Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations specific to the work and conduct on the job, including Safety Data Sheet (SDS) instructions, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

• Comply with all UW and UW Facilities policies and procedures, M&C protocols, i.e., Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP).

• Support all management directives and the vision and values of M&C.

• Participate in and follow through with M&C process improvement initiatives, including incorporating metrics and Lean principles into internal work processes, and promoting employee engagement in continuous improvements and innovation.

• Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status and work progress, required project materials and equipment.

• Communicate and coordinate with other UW Facilities shops to facilitate work.

• Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites.

• Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled.

• Provide excellent customer service through effective, courteous and professional interactions with clients, colleagues and the campus community.

• May instruct semi-skilled workers.

• Other duties as required.

Requirements include:

• Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a journey worker,

OR full-journey status in a union;

OR four years' applicable work experience.

Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.

• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

• Landscape Irrigation Auditor certification.

• Backflow Assembly Tester (BAT) certification.

• Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) and

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations.

• Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or

equivalent products

• Knowledge and experience with basic hand and power tools.

Conditions of Employment:

• Possession of a valid Washington State driver's license.

• Experience in grounds maintenance, which includes maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, modifying, installing and monitoring landscape irrigation systems.

• Experience developing and programming complex irrigation schedules utilizing stand-alone and central control systems.

• Demonstrated understanding of plant water requirements, evapotranspiration, micro-climate variables and soil moisture relationships.

• May be required to accept variable work shift.

• Must be able to work outside under all weather conditions.

• Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions.

• Ability to lift and move heavy material may be required.

• Approved footwear must be provided at the employee's expense and worn on the job.

• Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.

• Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.

• Regular and predictable attendance is required.

• May be required to accept variable work shift.
