The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences invites applications for a full-time Special Faculty/Lecturer position in the Department of Fine & Performing Arts to begin mid- September 2024. This position will specialize in Music Technology. The candidate hired into this position will receive a one-year appointment for AY2024-2025 with the option for renewal based on performance, funding availability and department need.

The position will anchor the Bachelor of Arts in Music Technology degree, which is designed to provide training for students who are aiming for a professional career in the music industry as creative entrepreneurs, performers, songwriters, engineers, and producers. This program embraces a dynamic and contemporary music curriculum that offers hands-on learning experiences for music professions in sound design, audio engineering, mastering, song writing, composition, and music production. This degree is nationally accredited and includes courses from Entrepreneurship and Design to provide relevant training in this emerging field. The program is a part of the Fine and Performing Arts department within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, which offers opportunities for creative interdisciplinary course work and research.

The successful candidate will have teaching responsibilities involving a variety of Music Technology courses based on the candidate's expertise and the needs of the department. A typical workload for this position will include 45 credits per academic year, subject to department needs. Release time for service work to the department is negotiable. Such duties can include productions studio maintenance, operations and proficiency training. Support for audio recording, editing and archiving. Teaching responsibilities may include the following: Participate in developing new courses, both in-person and online; Supervise internships; Advise Music majors; Engage in curriculum review and revision of existing courses; Explore the creation of new courses based on the candidate's expertise and the needs of the Music major. The candidate should be ready to teach face-to-face and online course offerings. Additionally, all faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.

The required start date for this position is 09/16/2024. To be considered eligible for appointment into the position, applicants must be available and able to start in the position no later than 09/16/2024.

Required Qualifications
  • A graduate degree in Music Technology or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated evidence of publications and/or conference presentations. Peer-reviewed work preferred.
  • Demonstrated evidence of work or research with music industry from an entrepreneurial approach.
  • Demonstrated evidence of collaborative work in creative or research-related interdisciplinary environments.
  • Demonstrated evidence of recruiting students, with particular focus on those transferring from a community college.
  • Demonstrated evidence of successful teaching in music technology with reference to syllabi and course evaluations.
  • Demonstrated high degree of interest, ability, and/or experience promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal accessibility, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be granted to candidates who offer one or more of the following preferred qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Music Technology, or a closely related field.
  • Professional-level Audio Recording and Sound Design Programming Skills
  • Active involvement in professional community engagement and/or ties to the local music community.
  • Expertise in studio production, recording, and audio engineering.
  • Experience working with first generation students and under-represented groups.
  • Experience mentoring students in studio/lab work and in live concert productions.

Teaching Responsibility

Teaching: typical workload for this position will involve 45 credits per academic year and the candidate may be required to teach other courses that fulfill the need of the Department and Program according to the expertise of the candidate hired into the position. Release time for service to the program is negotiable.

Teaching includes the following additional related responsibilities as defined in the faculty CBA :
  • Meet all scheduled classes
  • Plan, organize and inform students of course content, texts, readings, assignments, attendance regulations and methods of evaluation including grading scales
  • Schedule and attend office hours
  • Turn in grades according to established deadlines




Additionally, all faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.

  • Courses taught may include: 3D Audio, Audio Engineering Aural Skills, Creative Coding (Max/ MSP ), a Makerspace course, Case Studies in Music Industry, Recording Arts, Sound Design and Mastering.
