Position Summary

Incumbents in these part-time positions will serve as the research assistants in the Liu lab affiliated with the Center for Neurological Disease Research, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, and Department of Biomedical Sciences. The NIH-funded research projects in the Liu lab target cellular to system level mechanisms of signal processing in the brain for the sense of smell in normal physiological conditions or pathological conditions including neurodegeneration and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The incumbent in this position will participate in animal-based experimental activities including survival and non-survival animal surgeries, data collection and analysis, data presentation and project reports, technique development and execution. Prior experience or skills in performing tissue sectioning, immunohistochemical studies, electrophysiological recordings of neuronal signals, confocal imaging, behavioral tests in rodents, or stereotaxic surgeries will be considered as core competencies for these positions.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Prior experience or skills in at least one of the following areas: tissue sectioning, immunohistochemical studies, electrophysiological recordings, confocal imaging, rodent colony maintenance and management, behavioral tests in rodents, or stereotaxic surgeries.
  • Motivation and ability to learn and acquire new research techniques in a fast paced and sometimes stressful environment.
  • Experience in working with small animals including mice.
  • Ability to comprehend instructions and follow them with common sense and critical thinking.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks and prioritize work assignments after a training period.
  • Effectively communicate and work well with others in the lab as a team.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, pay attention to details.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
