Department Summary

The mission of the University of Michigan Recreational Sports is promoting a healthy lifestyle through engagement, leadership and activity. The Department operates multiple programs, four indoor facilities and two outdoor field complexes. The department consists of 36 full-time staff and over 650 student employees. Established in 1913, the department is considered to be one of the first collegiate recreation programs and is the first program to have a facility dedicated to student recreation (Intramural Sports Building, 1928). Recreational Sports reports to Student Life through the Associate Vice President of Student Life.

Job Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic II employee is responsible for the overall maintenance of fitness equipment at one of three comprehensive Recreational Sports facilities. Also conducts minor facility maintenance and repairs and provides assistance for facility maintenance projects in other Recreational Sports facilities.

Responsibilities*

Fitness Equipment Maintenance - 50%
  • Perform maintenance work on over 200 pieces of department exercise, fitness and weight equipment
  • Conduct preventive maintenance procedures (oiling, greasing, vacuuming, replacing worn parts) as well as troubleshooting, adjusting and repairing machines as needed
  • Fabricate parts for machines when part is no longer in stock, or company machine was purchased from goes out of business/or find alternative supplier
  • Repair/replace clutch sprockets, alternators, drive sprockets, chains, alternator timing belts, pedal arms and leveling arm bushings on step equipment
  • Repair/replace crank bearing mechanisms, chains and cams, pedal assembly, seats, heart rate sensors and belts on exercise bicycles
  • Repair/replace consoles, heart rate sensors, decks, belts and rollers on treadmills
  • Must be able to repair/replace consoles, heart rate sensors, pedal arms, pedals, bushings, etc. on ellipticals
  • Test computerized equipment and install consoles
  • Repair/replace cables, belts, pulleys, hydraulic cylinders and bushings on all weight equipment
  • Repair/replace shock cords, chains, monitor pick-up with cable and cages on rowing ergometers
  • Assemble new exercise equipment as needed
  • Maintain weight stations including painting as needed
  • Replace padding and upholstering on all weight machines and benches
  • Take broken parts to appropriate repair shops (welding/alternator shop, etc.)

Miscellaneous - 30%
  • General repairs/replacement of locks, locker doors, basketball rims, backboards and padding, basketball nets (indoor and out), volleyball nets, poles, referee stands, antennas and badminton nets, poles, sleeves
  • Building shutdown and renovation projects including but not limited to taking apart exercise machines, assembling and disassembling exercise equipment, and moving equipment
  • Repair/replace sauna boards
  • Sand and coat benches/shelves
  • Repair/replace pool lane lines and backstroke flags
  • Cleaning/repair of floor and ceiling fans
  • Install, repair and paint floors, ceilings, walls and partitions
  • Perform electrical, carpentry or general minor repairs on various building problems

Other - 20%
  • Order and/or purchase parts, meet with and coordinate vendors and supply ordering, as needed
  • Clean assigned areas of work and equipment
  • Attend trainings and/or professional development opportunities as assigned


Required Qualifications*

  • Minimum 3 years experience in equipment, machine and/or automotive maintenance/repair work
  • Ability to follow directions and work independently and in a small work team; read and write with accuracy
  • Experience using hand and power tools
  • Proven ability to maintain safe, clean, organized area of operation
  • Forklift and lift certifications or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Must be able to travel to/from worksites


Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in minor facility maintenance and repairs
  • Experience in exercise equipment repair


Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM

40 hours per week, full-time.

Physical requirements
  • Routinely moves and transports heavy equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • The incumbent is required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time and do repetitive tasks with few breaks.
