Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist is dedicated to providing quality service in a timely, courteous, and cost effective manner. We work in tandem with the physicians to provide quality diagnostic service to our customers. Essential Functions
Section 1 - Knowledge and Standards of Performance The Medical Technologist performs work that will meet national credentialing agency standards, federal, state, and local surveys. The Medical Technologist must be on time. Meet hospital attendance requirements. Manage time in accordance with policy and procedures. Notify other laboratory staff when unable to report to work and make an effort to secure own replacement. Attend staff meetings (in lieu of attendance, read, sign and date meeting minutes). Must meet dress code standards and practice good personal hygiene. Must be familiar with the Hospital Disaster Plan, Fire Plan, Safety Plan and Policy and Procedure Manual. Must be familiar with and practice appropriate handling techniques for infectious material and waste, applicable to Universal (standard) Precautions, which must be used at all times when handling infectious materials. Must use appropriate handling techniques for hazardous material and toxic chemicals. The Medical Technologist will direct the work of the Laboratory Assistant and review work of Medical Lab Technician as needed. Maintains a positive, customer-oriented attitude. Meets organizational and work unit standards as outlined in policies and procedures. Performs all job duties in accordance with recognized safety procedures. Demonstrates the ability to make calm and sensible decisions under various work situations, dealing with immediate problems reasonably. Section 2 - Processes and Procedures Must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: knowledge of Phlebotomy policies and procedures including ability to collect blood nasal, throat and eye culture specimens. Meditech use with regard to the LAB menus. Testing procedures in Blood Banking, Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Body Fluid Analysis. Basic background knowledge of microbiology including gramstain preparation and reading. Medical Technologists assigned to perform Microbiology must be proficient in all Micro procedures. Knowledge of normal and alarm values and procedures on reporting and documenting. Knowledge of any necessary calculations. Performance and evaluation of Quality Control and use of corrective measures. Maintenance of all required logs. Processing AAB and other proficiency testing specimens. Ordering supplies. Miscellaneous duties as assigned. Section 3 - Knowledge/Use of Equipment The Medical Technologist is responsible for following: Performance and documentation of daily, weekly and monthly maintenance on all instruments. Scheduling contract maintenance. Troubleshooting any instrument or procedural problems, making hotline calls when appropriate and using proper documentation techniques. Assisting Laboratory team in researching, developing and implementing any new testing procedures. Ability to perform light manual labor, distinguish between various shades of colors. Must be able to twist, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, climb, push/pull, grasp/handle and able to lift and carry 10-24 pounds. Section 4 - Continuous Quality Improvement Leads and/or participates in developing and designing systems and processes for the new organization. Continually improves and redesigns processes to increase productivity and quality. Section 5 - Required Education and Training *Continuing Education: Identifies new topics for continuing education, and pursues educational offerings. Shares educational information with coworkers, keeps record of continuing education. Uses educational information to develop/update practice standards. Attends staff meetings and all annual mandatory sessions. Actively participates in staff orientation. Bachelors of Science Degree and ASCP Medical Scientist Certification or equivalent education as listed above. Continuing education credit will be received for, but not limited to the following: monthly department meetings. Continuing Education Journal Article posted on the board in the supervisor's office. Laboratory in-services. Section 6 - Resource Utilization Demonstrates responsible use of resources, including time, facilities, supplies, equipment, staff, information, finances, education and developmental assets. Fiscally responsible, including corporate billing compliance. Efficiently uses resources, tools and supplies, recycling when possible. Uses and disposes of confidential information appropriately. Shares expertise and knowledge with others. Cares for equipment properly. Spends education funds responsibly to enhance job performance. Practices accountable and productive time management. Shares responsibility in facility upkeep (i.e.: see it, own it, do it, solve it). Seeks information and plans work to maximize team effectiveness.

Education
Bachelor of Science degree required OR Baccalaureate in applied science from an accredited institution, OR equivalent official military or non-military training/experience per CLIA standards/regulation. Associate degree may also be accepted with equivalent years of experience and with required MLS certificate.

Experience/Training
Prefer two (2) years experience as a generalist in a hospital laboratory setting.

License/Certifications
One of the following certifications required: Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) ASCP, AMT or AAB certification Medical Technologist (MT) ASCP, Blood Bank (BB) ASCP, Chemistry(C) ASCP, or Hematology (H) ASCP, Microbiology (M) ASCP or equivalent licensure required within eighteen (18) months of hire. Washington State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy preferred. American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Repetitive tasks such as typing, sitting, answering phones, and interacting with computers and computer systems most of the day is a function of the position. This position is very active and requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching all day. The employee must frequently lift or move objects up to 45 pounds and position patients to perform phlebotomy. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to focus.Skagit Regional Health offers a comprehensive benefit package including medical, dental, vision, 457b/401a (retirement), long term disability, and paid time off to all employees holding an FTE of 20 or more hours per week.
