Postdoctoral Research Associate
Princeton, New Jersey
Employer: Princeton University
Industry: Research
Salary: Competitive
Job type: Full-Time
The research groups of Prof. Michael E. Mueller and Prof. Luc Deike invite applications for postdoctoral or more senior research positions in the field of wind-wave modeling, broadly defined. The research would be performed within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with strong ties to the High Meadows Environmental Institute. Positions may begin as soon as January 2024. A Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Geosciences, Computational Mathematics, or a related area is required. The projects would involve modeling wind-wave-current interactions with various possible applications: i) offshore wind modeling, building on recent the Large Eddy Simulation framework by Aiyer, Deike, and Mueller 2023 (A. Aiyer, L. Deike, and M.E. Mueller, A sea surface based drag model for Large Eddy Simulation of wind wave interaction, J. Atmos. Sci. 80 [2023] 49-62; A. Aiyer, L. Deike, and M.E. Mueller, A dynamic wall modeling approach for Large Eddy Simulations of offshore wind farms in realistic oceanic conditions [2023] under review); ii) mean wind profile and drag modeling for complex seas (high wind speed, misaligned waves and wind, presence of current), building on recent Direct Numerical Simulations from Wu, Popinet, and Deike 2022 (J. Wu, S. Popinet, and L. Deike, Revisiting wind wave growth with fully-coupled direct numerical simulations, J. Fluid Mech. 951 [2022] A18); and/or iii) small-scale wave dynamics in the context of remote sensing and the effect of waves and wave breaking on upper ocean processes (Langmuir turbulence and wave-current interaction), building on recent multilayer modeling approaches from Wu, Popinet, and Deike 2023 (J. Wu, S. Popinet, and L. Deike, Breaking wave statistics with a multilayer model, J. Fluid Mech. 968 [2023] A12). The projects have overlapping synergies, and the postdoctoral researchers will interact with graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from both research groups. Previous experience in computational modeling of multi-physics turbulent flows and parallel computing/software development is strongly desired. Appointments are for one year, renewable annually based on satisfactory performance and available funding. Appointments are subject to the University's background check policy. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. Applicants must apply online and submit their vitae, including a list of publications and presentations, a summary of research accomplishments and interests, and the names and contact information of at least three potential references to https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/32342
