Summary

CHS has an exciting opportunity at our Oil Refinery facility in Laurel, MT. We are looking for a Process Controls Engineer - Expert to work with a team to prepare designs, specifications, start-up assistance, and support for refinery instrumentation and control projects and to provide support to maintenance and operations for troubleshooting and other instrument and control needs. You must be a detail-oriented, results-driven individual with a commitment to quality, accuracy, and the ability to organize and prioritize workloads to meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with a strong commitment to customer service and the ability to work in both a team environment and on self-directed tasks are necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Support maintenance and operations units on field instrumentation issues
  • Demonstrates creativity in applying engineering standards and specifications to support Refinery Processing Engineering Group on instrumentation design, installation, and modification of instrumentation systems in the refinery.
  • Configure Distributed Control System (DCS) and develop schematics for use by operators.
  • Under minimal guidance, defines the technical approach to prepare I&C design and engineering deliverables including instrument Index, Instrument Data Sheets, Instrument Specifications
  • Leads the planning, organization, and implementation of projects, including the development of Design Drawings including Control System Architecture, Control Panel Layouts with BOM, Instrument Junction Box (IJB), Instrument Loop Wiring Diagrams, Control Schematics, Cable Schedules, Instrument Installation Details, and Instrument Location Plans.
  • Be on call for and respond to plant emergencies during non-business hours.
  • Support the refinery during scheduled turnarounds and major maintenance events.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and instrument technicians.
  • Drive documentation towards standardization, creating and/or modifying documentation on refinery process instrumentation including engineering procedures and test procedures.
  • Lead the controls portion of major capital projects as needed to meet business needs.
  • Write and perform control/safety functional and proof test procedures.
  • Supports the plant Safety Instrumented System (SIS) through all phases of the SIS Life Cycle. Design and Engineering, Installation and Commissioning, Operation and Maintenance, Modification, and Decommissioning.
  • Supports Advanced Process Control applications within the Refinery.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and diagnostic health check activities on plant-wide control systems; document results to ensure system reliability and availability.
  • Ensures OT cybersecurity compliance and all backup and recovery methods.
  • Maintain and promote a strong safety culture for all employees, vendors, and customers and follow all safety policies, procedures and regulations. Identify and communicate workplace hazards and correct or seek assistance
  • Perform other duties as requested or needed.

Minimum Qualifications (required)

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related four-year degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 7+ years of experience in control systems engineering

Additional Qualifications

  • Technical understanding and experience with refinery processes (thermodynamics, unit operations, and controls)
  • 3+ years of experience with Advanced Process Control
  • 5+ years of experience with Emerson DeltaV
  • Working knowledge of applicable EHS requirements
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook)
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems
  • Proficiency with Aspen DMC3 Advanced Process Control Methods
  • Knowledge of data analysis techniques, root cause analysis tools and applications
  • Experience in control system design, PSM requirements and capital project management
