Berkeley Lab's (LBNL) Biological Systems and Engineering (BSE) Division has an opening for a Research Associate to provide technical and research support for microbial culturing, molecular cloning, and genetic transformations. The responsibilities of this position include completing assignments related to Molecular Biology and Microbiological research, data analysis. This Research Associate will work on Biological Lignin Depolymerization and CO 2 -based biomanufacturing projects.

This position has an anticipated start date of June 17, 2024.

What You Will Do:
  • Provide research and technical support, including data collection, processing, and analysis, to meet project goals and deadlines.
  • Perform molecular cloning and microbiology related work, including mini prep plasmids, sequence analysis, PCR, gel extraction, DNA assembly, transformation, colony screening, etc.
  • Implement cultivation and transformation protocols for non-model bacteria.
  • Perform physiological experiments with model and non-model organisms.
  • Perform basic lab duties, including maintaining and purchasing consumables, personal lab bench, and common area organization.
  • Maintain lab notebook and instrumentation data.
  • Participate in group meetings and prepare reports.


What is Required:
  • A Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field and a minimum of 1 year of directly relevant lab experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, including genomic DNA and plasmid preparation, PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, restriction digestion, ligation, transformation, colony picking, and screening.
  • Experience with multiple sample collection and processing.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with basic office software, including MS Office Suite, Google Workspace, Adobe Suite, etc
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including maintaining detailed and accurate laboratory documents and records.
  • Effective interpersonal skills include working independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary laboratory environment.

  • This position is expected to pay $24.46 - $31.18 per hour for job code 381.1, which fits within the full salary range of $24.46 - $37.88 per hour. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
