Job Description

The Mims Lab seeks a research technician to assist and lead research activities related to three ongoing projects. (1) The selected candidate will assist in a population genomics project for multiple (N=12) aquatic macroinvertebrate taxa, including specimen ID and preparation, DNA extraction, and ddRAD library prep. (2) The selected candidate will be expected to lead a systematic literature review to explore the role of widely available species occurrence data in understanding species vulnerability to climate change. (3) The selected candidate will co-lead maintenance and deployment of acoustic recorders in sites locally (Blacksburg, VA, USA) and remotely (southern Arizona, USA). In addition to these tasks, the candidate will be expected to assist with general lab maintenance and management, including restocking and ordering, basic repairs, and organization of laboratory and field equipment. The selected candidate should work well independently as well as a member of a team. They should also be able to demonstrate, from their professional record, excellent written and verbal communication skills. An interest in mentoring undergraduate researchers is preferred. Required Qualifications

-At least 6 months experience with DNA extraction of aquatic macroinvertebrates, including gut removal.
-Design and planning of systematic literature review related to species vulnerability to climate change.
-At least 6 months experience with field-based maintenance and deployment of acoustic recorders.
-Record of leading peer-reviewed publications.

Preferred Qualifications

-Master's degree in ecology, conservation, or related field.
-Valid Driver's License and experience operating 4WD vehicle.
-Experience in both local and remove fieldwork settings.
-Experience with and interest in mentoring undergraduate researchers.
-Strong interest in applied conservation research in freshwater aquatic systems.
-Record of science communication to broad audiences.
