General Statement of Duties

Provides a full range of social work services at assigned schools including counseling, crisis response, and intervention, assessment, threat assessment consultation to school personnel,

parent outreach and education, enforcement of compulsory attendance, and coordination of community services on behalf of students. The employee collaborates with other school

and community professionals to develop effective strategies to overcome barriers to student achievement.
  • Assists teachers and other school personnel in developing and implementing strategies to more effectively address student achievement and/ or behavior problems;
  • Participates in the development of student IEP's and SEP's;
  • Collects, analyzes and interprets data related to student outcomes;
  • Develops and implements educational programs to address specific learning and/or behavioral needs of students;
  • Provides information, training and consultation to school personnel in the area of child abuse and neglect and other selected topics;
  • Provides information and consultation to school personnel on the availability and appropriate use of community resources;
  • Evaluates requests for release from compulsory attendance and prepares recommendations for action;
  • Represents the school division in contacts with the judicial system and other community agencies regarding compulsory attendance;
  • Upon request, investigates cases of possible violation of residency requirements.


Essential Duties

  • Conducts assessments of students experiencing academic and social adjustment problems in compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations for special education services;
  • Completes social evaluations, attendance reports, and other assessments in compliance with mandated timelines;
  • Collaborates with teachers, administrators, and other school personnel to provide effective instruction and support to marginally performing or high-risk students;
  • Provides research-based strategies, intervention and progress monitoring to address academic and behavioral needs of students;
  • Performs structured observations of students in both the school and home settings to resolve problems with learning, behavior, and/or attendance;
  • Consults with teachers to help them to better understand and work with individual students from diverse populations;
  • Completes student risk assessments;
  • Serves as member of school-based child find and special education eligibility committees and on crisis intervention and student intervention teams;
  • Provides school-based mental health services for students that includes evidenced-based interventions and practices; individual and/or group counseling for students including crisis intervention services that include grief counseling for students and adults as well as debriefing for school staff;
  • Coordinates school and community services on behalf of student sand their families;
  • Works to resolve school attendance problems and to affect student and parent compliance with the compulsory attendance statute of Virginia;
  • Makes referrals to the truancy interagency committee and the court system;
  • Assists administrators in resolving questions of legal residency for school attendance;
  • Conducts a variety of parent education activities geared to supporting and strengthening the school-parent relationship;
  • Plans, develops and implements professional development training for administration and staff;
  • Provides supervision of school social worker graduate and B.S.W.interns as assigned;
  • Acts as a school liaison between schools and community agencies/professionals serving students and their families;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Master of Social Work degree from a regionally accredited college or university;Pupil Personnel License with an endorsement in school social work.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) preferred. Strong written and verbalcommunication skills.

Organizational ability to provide a wide range ofservices at multiple sites with varying needs.

Understanding of theorganization of schools, school law, exceptional education, and behavioral andmental health needs of children.

11 and 12-month positions are available. The minimum salaries are as follows:
  • 11-month/239 day position is $65,437
  • 12-month/260 day position is $71,187

The annual salary for this position will be prorated based upon the official start date.
