This position will serve as a split position for both NC Crop Improvement Assoc (NCCIA) and NC Foundation Seed Producers (NCFSPI). The function is to ensure a reliable seed source for NC growers that is true to type, disease-free, and without noxious weeds, within a tolerance level. This applies to all grain crops such as barley, oats, peanuts, wheat, tobacco, triticale, and soybeans as well as vegetatively propagated crops like raspberries, strawberries, sweet potatoes, and turfgrass.

Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of this position is to serve both NCCIA and NCFSPI. For NCCIA this position will serve as an inspector, seed certification consultant, auditor, and promoter of seed certification. For the NCFSPI program, this position will have responsibility for seed production, seed processing, shipping and handling, and facility maintenance.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Assist in all activities of seed production of various small grains, soybeans, and peanuts.
  • Furnish each assigned contract grower with sufficient seed supply to meet production demands.
  • Apply certification standards to various crops being produced.
  • Assist in seed harvest operations.
  • Assist in seed conditioning to remove weed seed, other crop seed, immature and poor quality seed to the point of quality seed production.
  • Facilitate modifying the seed processing line to handle the various pieces of equipment used for conditioning; each crop has different requirements for maximum conditioning efficiency.
  • Collect seed samples to validate the purity and germination of seed lots.
  • Obtain and process seed lots through the NCCIA seed lab
  • Organizes data collected from field inspection reports summarizes results in formal reports and presents findings to related organizations.
  • Updates AgTrakker/Access-based databases, reviews them for accuracy and presents findings at association-sponsored meetings.
  • Audits Approved Conditioners and Alternative label reports to determine the accuracy of tagging sheets and seed production reports

Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications
  • Be able to drive a forklift, tractor, combine, large truck and operate machinery as a welder, grinder, etc.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs repetitively with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work in tough environmental conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CDL Class A with Airbrake.
  • Pesticide Applicators License - Seed Treatment Endorsement.
  • Crop Production Experience in Peanuts, Turfgrass, Small Grains, Soybeans, and/or Tobacco.
  • Excellent Communication Skills.
Required License or Certification
  • A valid NC Driver's License and the ability to obtain an NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
  • A valid Driver's License must be maintained throughout employment.
  • NC CDL Class A or the ability to obtain an NC CDL Class A license within 60 days of hire.
