Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Uses professional expertise to identify and mitigate Environment of Care risks to Team Members, Patients, and Visitors.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Team Members may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
  • This position may perform work for and at all UMH Region Locations
  • Conducts safety inspections of buildings and grounds on a periodic basis, in keeping with accreditation requirements. Identify hazards and work with area management to correct deficiencies. Maintain database and ensure corrections are completed in a timely fashion. Analyze data and report trends to the Safety Committee for loss prevention and loss control.
  • Enforces compliance with UMH Regional Safety policies, accreditation Performance Standards, MIOSHA.OSHA standards and regulatory standards, as applicable.
  • Recommends educational needs resulting from inspections.
  • Assists with delivery of educational programming to Team Members.
  • Serves as liaison between department/site managers and Safety Committees.
  • Performs mock surveys for Joint Commission and ACHC readiness. Reports deficiencies to EOC Safety Director .
  • Oversees annually required chemical inventory and air monitoring program.
  • Assists in investigating safety related incidents.
  • Offers suggestions to ensure continuous improvement in the safety program.
  • Accepts and performs other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Safety Director.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and respects patient, service provider and organizational confidentiality procedures and protocol defined under the HIPPA Privacy standards.
  • Follows established HIPPA privacy procedures when using and/or disclosing protected health information.
  • Maintains and protects patients' rights under the HIPPA Privacy Standards.
  • Chairs safety committee meetings and subcommittee(s) and prepares/publishes minutes
  • Independently manage safety programs including Recall, Spills, Hazardous Waste, Chemical Monitoring, PCRA/ICRA, etc.
  • Updates Safety Polices
  • Updates SDS database
  • Prepares annual hospital management plans
  • Acts as EOC representative on other Region committees/task forces


Job Requirements

General Requirements

• Healthcare professions requiring licensure in the State of Michigan must have and maintain current licensure. • Valid drivers license • A certification in safety such as CHSP - preferred.

Work Experience

• See Education.

Education

• Bachelor's Degree in Safety, Hazardous Materials Management, Industrial Hygiene, Healthcare Administration or relevant field and a minimum 4 years of relevant experience. • Graduate level education/certification - preferred.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

• Strong organizational skills. • Ability to take direction and complete projects on time with limited direction • Behavior consistent with UMH values of excellence, service, people, responsibility, innovations and teamwork. • Ability to communicate effectively with associates at all levels within the organization. • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job. • Demonstrated experience using a variety of software applications • Demonstrated experience problem solving • Experience with NFPA Life Safety Code - preferred. • Experience implementing MIOSHA Standards - preferred. • Familiarity with TJC Environment of Care and Life Safety accreditation standards, and safety and environmental regulations - preferred.
