JOB SUMMARY & PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS

REPORTS TO: School Principal

JOB SUMMARY (2-3 sentences): In the absence of the regular classroom teacher to help students to learn subject matter and/or skills that are required for scheduled lessons and to provide meaningful instruction for assigned classrooms. Performs duties usually required of absent teacher such as lunchroom duty, hall monitoring, etc.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS: List, in the order of time spent, the essential tasks performed by the position. Employees may be assigned additional duties by management as required.

Job Responsibility 1:

Reports to school office at beginning of school day to pick up required materials/schedule of classes and at the end of the school day to return materials. Follows sign out procedures as prescribed by the principal.

Job Responsibility 2:

Carries out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.

Job Responsibility 3:

Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.

Job Responsibility 4:

Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned.

Job Responsibility 5:

Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives.

Job Responsibility 6:

Maintains a neat and orderly classroom. Straightens chairs, tables, clears chalkboard, etc. Takes attendance in accordance with school procedures.

Job Responsibility 7:

Indicates to students at beginning of class the basic expectations for behavior in the class in accordance with school and Buncombe County Schools policies.

Job Responsibility 8:

Insures that the students are never left unattended in the classroom. Knows emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned; procedures for referring students who are disciplinary problems; and school procedures and regulations.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: "Mathematics" deals with quantities, magnitudes, and forms and their relationships and attributes by the use of numbers and symbols.

Uses addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; may compute ratios, rates, and percentages.

COMMUNICATIONS REQUIREMENTS: "Communications" involves the ability to read, write, and speak.

Reads journals and manuals; composes specialized reports and business letters using proper format and grammar; speaks to groups of coworkers and people outside the organization.

COMPLEXITY OF WORK: "Complexity of Work" addresses the analysis, initiative, ingenuity, creativity, and concentration required by the position and the presence of any unusual pressures.

Performs work involving the application of logical principles and thinking to solve practical problems within or applying to a unit or division of the organization; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results and frequent exposure to unusual pressure.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS: "Impact of Decisions" refers to consequences such as damage to property, loss of data or property, exposure of the organization to legal liability, or injury or death to individuals.

Makes decisions with serious impact - affects most units in organization, and may affect citizens.

EQUIPMENT USAGE: "Equipment Usage" refers to inanimate objects such as substances, materials, machines, tools, equipment, work aids, or products. A thing is tangible and has shape, form, and other physical characteristics.

Establishes methods and procedures for acquiring and handling machines, tools, equipment, or work aids involving extensive latitude for judgment regarding attainment of standard or in selecting appropriate items.

SAFETY OF OTHERS: "Safety of Others" refers to the responsibility for other people's safety, either inherent in the job or to assure the safety of the general public.

Requires considerable responsibility for the safety and health of others and/or continuous enforcement of the laws and standards of public health and safety.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: "Education Requirements" refers to job specific training and education required for entry into the position.

Bachelor's Degree or higher.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: "Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations" refers to professional, state, or federal licenses, certifications, or registrations required to enter the position.

Must have a valid Teaching License.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: "Experience Requirements" refers to the amount of work experience that is required for entry into the position that would result in reasonable expectation that the person can perform the tasks required by the position.

Prior teaching experience preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: "Physical Demands" refers to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Standing and walking: generally 8 hours per day (fully functioning)

Lifting and carrying: frequently lifting 30 lbs and occasionally lifting 70 lbs

Push and pull: unlimited grasp and fingering

Dexterity: ability to operate machines, tools or office equipment

Additional requirements: unlimited reaching to shoulder height; frequently climbs stairs; exposure to heat extremes.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS: "Unavoidable Hazards" refers to unusual conditions in the work environment that may cause illness or injury.

The position is exposed to extreme heat/cold, wet or humid conditions, bright/dim lights, dust or pollen, intense noise levels, vibration, fumes or noxious odors, moving mechanical parts, disease/pathogens, and traffic.

SENSORY (ADA) REQUIREMENTS: "Sensory Requirements" refers to hearing, sight, touch, taste, and smell necessary to perform the tasks required by the position efficiently.

The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, and depth perception.
