POSITION SUMMARY
Substitute Dance Educators are valued members of the Portland Public Schools community who play an integral role in supporting the students and school communities of Portland Public Schools. Working as a Substitute Educator with Portland Public Schools requires a high level of flexibility and adaptability. Substitute Educators are eligible to work throughout the district in any school, any subject, and any grade level working a flexible schedule on an as-needed basis, with the ability to assign themselves to jobs up to one month in advance.
Substitute Educators are responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and facilitating student learning in the absence of the regular educator. Substitute Educators perform under the supervision of a principal or other designated supervisor, and have the responsibility to continue the instructional program according to the directions left by the absent educator. Substitute Educators function in accordance with all PPS policies, rules, and regulations, and in accordance with the performance standards of the District.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Substitute Educators are paid based upon half days and full days. The full day rate is $247.58, and the half day rate is $123.79.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
- Implement and deliver instructions left by the absent Classroom Educator while ensuring the integrity of academic time.
- Model and instruct students appropriately in citizenship and interpersonal relationships and responsibilities.
- Provide instruction, organization, and management in the classroom, which creates an environment conducive to learning.
- Manage student behavior and maintain discipline in accordance with school, district, and state policies, procedures, and laws.
- Advocate, model, and implement Portland Public Schools Racial Educational Equity policy.
- Confer with the principal or designated supervisor concerning the completion of any reports that may be necessary including but not limited to student attendance and performance.
- Communicate necessary information regularly to the absent educator as well as students, colleagues, and caregivers regarding student progress and needs as needed.
- Supervise classified employees who are assigned to assist the absent teacher, classroom, or designated students.
- Display judgment that supports professional standards of conduct at all times.
- Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance or Portfolio of Proof as described below:
- Candidates who do not possess a BFA must provide a portfolio of proof in the following areas:
- Comprehensive study of dance in modern, jazz, contemporary, or ballet that built fundamental skills and techniques in forms such as Limon, Graham, Dunham, Horton, Luigi, Cecchetti, Balanchine, or Bournonville. Training solely in competitive dance would not qualify.
- Professional dance performance experience
- And an Associates Degree or higher from an accredited University
- Possession of (or eligibility to receive) an Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission Limited License in Dance. For more information, visit: https://www.oregon.gov/tspc/Pages/index.aspx
- If selected for hire , candidates will be responsible for applying and paying the non-reimbursed fees for the Limited Term Teaching License in Dance through TSPC (ranging from $180-$285). If not currently held, please do not apply for licensure until a job offer from PPS has been received.
- Strong background in movement improvisation and choreographic composition
- Experience directing rehearsals in preparation for performances
- Three years of dance teaching experience in a youth education setting, beginning to advanced dance, preferably in inner-city settings
