The Herron School of Art and Design seeks applicants for an Academic Advisor position. Academic Advisors at Herron are instrumental in providing guidance and support to undergraduate and graduate students who are seeking to achieve knowledge, expertise, and a degree in one of the many degree programs offered by Herron on the IU Indianapolis campus. Degrees are available in art education, art history, art therapy, design, music technology, music therapy, and studio art in multiple disciplines.

Herron School of Art and Design is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) . Music and Arts Technology courses are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) . The music therapy program is approved the the American Music Therapy Association .

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Provides academic advising for Herron undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Assists students with developing solutions to academic problems.
  • Prepares, maintains, and advises students regarding academic records, degree requirements, test scores, grades, and course selection to meet academic standards.
  • Oversees progress of students; regularly review student and academic records to determine academic standing, probation, and eligibility for graduation.
  • Works with faculty to provide support to at-risk students.
  • Assists in preparing curriculum exemptions, exception, or substitution when appropriate.
  • Provides support to students on the use of the various campus support services and resources.
  • Participates and provide input in developing policies and procedures related to student academics such as curriculum, testing, orientation, enrollment procedures, etc.
  • Meets with prospective beginning, incoming, transfer, prospective IUPUI and current students to discuss academic planning, evaluate and articulate transfer credit and assist with registration.
  • Holds Recorder duties.
  • Maintains the accuracy of Herron's Academic Advising Reports and degree map system by updating curricular requirements.
  • Performs graduation checks and degree conferrals.
  • Evaluates records for graduation requirements; distribute to appropriate University departments and certify all Herron degrees, certificates, and minors.
  • Collaborates with other Herron advising staff, administration, and faculty chairs in the scheduling of classes, working to update schedule builds in the university system and offer input on necessary changes as a result of student enrollment trends and degree requirements.
  • Serves as a liaison with the Registrar's office for scheduling and Recorder duties.
  • Facilitates winter and summer orientation program for beginning, transfer, and graduate students, leading the academic planning and registration segments.
  • Collaborates with faculty on the facilitation of the advancement reviews for BFA and BAE students.
  • Validates student qualifications, organize registration, and verify completion.
  • Serves on the instructional team for Herron's First Year Seminar course and Summer Bridge; leads all advising units, and collaborates with team to make course revisions.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides academic counseling for students pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates. Guides students in planning their course of study in concert with the departments' curricular requirements; explains curriculum requirements and school and campus policies.
  • Meets with students in groups and one-on-one to guide students in academic programs that will meet their educational needs and the requirements of their chosen major, minor, and/or certificate.
  • Assists students in making informed decisions about a choice of major and potential career or graduate school direction; helps students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to major choice and potential future career/graduate school options.
  • Teaches students how to navigate university systems, academic processes, and policies; empowers student accountability in academic decisions about courses, career direction, and long-term plans; and provides guidance on avenues for increased involvement as an IU student and in the IU community.
  • Refers students to appropriate campus resources, such as academic support resources, placement programs, internship and overseas study opportunities, etc.
  • Tracks and monitors students' academic progress, reviews and maintains confidential student records to ensure that students meet requirements and to document advising discussions, and communicates this information in a timely manner to students and to appropriate academic offices when necessary.
  • Represents the advising function as a presenter at campus meetings and recruiting functions; assists in developing written advising materials for use in student events.
  • Researches, recommends, or creates best practices for unit or campus initiatives, projects, processes, or programs and may provide guidance to other Academic Advisors.
  • Roles above the Core career level may include expanded duties and leadership and/or higher expectations of performance in line with the campus advising ecosystem.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
Preferred
  • Master's degree in related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or related field.
Preferred
  • Experience in a student-focused, higher education environment is highly desired.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
