Position Summary

This Academic Advisor I position within UGA's College of Engineering is an entry-level advising position supporting incoming and current Engineering undergraduate students in their academic pursuits. The Academic Advisor I position:
  • Effectively facilitates one-on-one advising sessions with students pursuing majors within the College of Engineering.
  • Understands requirements, policies, procedures, and the use of student-facing technologies (Degree Works, SAGE, Athena, etc.).
  • Provides general support related to student decision-making, exploration, and development.
  • Makes basic referrals based on individual students' situations, needs, and interests.
  • Considers students' degree progress, interests, and abilities when providing advisement to students
  • Demonstrates professionalism and clarity in communications to students, staff, faculty, and others within and outside the college.
  • Maintains accurate records by following policies and procedures instituted by the college.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of university and degree requirements
  • Understands basic advising practice and how it is related to some aspects of student development.
  • Engages effectively with members of the home unit or department


This position will report directly to the College of Engineering Director of Advising (currently vacant) and is expected to manage a caseload of approximately 275-305 advisees. The Academic Advisor I position will work with other Academic Advisor I, II, and III Advisors, both independently and collaboratively as part of the college Advising team.

The primary function of all Academic Advisor positions in the College of Engineering is to administer student support to enrolled and prospective students while working collaboratively with other Academic Advisors and staff throughout the College of Engineering and across campus. In addition, Academic Advisors must stay abreast of current degree program procedures, policies, and curriculum requirements and of UGA-wide policies and procedures for UGA employees and Academic Advisors specifically. College of Engineering Academic Advisors will follow all UGA Academic Advising Services requirements and are encouraged to continue their professional learning through their learning and development resources and best practices.

The College of Engineering offers BS, MS, and PhD degree programs through four schools - School of Chemical, Materials, and Biomedical Engineering, School of Computing, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and School of Environmental, Civil, Agricultural, and Mechanical Engineering. The College of Engineering is a rapidly growing Engineering college at a flagship public university. Since its founding in 2012, UGA's College of Engineering has added multiple new degree programs, increased its enrollment to over 2,700 undergraduate and 300 graduate students, employs over 200 Faculty, Staff and Post-Doctoral Associates, and has had a 300% increase in research funding in the last 5 years.

  • Assists students with curriculum planning and registration each semester; and maintain student records/files.
  • Effectively facilitates one-on-one advising sessions.
  • Provides guidance to students on progress towards graduation.
  • Understands requirements, policies, procedures, and the use of student-facing technologies (DegreeWorks, SAGE, Athena, etc.).
  • Provides general support related to student decision-making, exploration, and development.
  • Considers students' degree progress, interests, and abilities in future planning.
  • Uses feedback and assesses student needs to enhance advising practice.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and clarity in communications.
  • Makes use of provided advising-related information, reports, and data to enhance advising practice.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of university and degree requirements, as well as University and unit-specific policies and procedures.
  • Understands basic advising practice and how it is related to some aspects of student development.
  • Uses DegreeWorks with orientation students to document degree selection, course registration and college resources.
  • Provide information about co-curricular opportunities (Co-op, Internships, Study Abroad, Graduate Studies, faculty-led research, etc.) and special services as per students' specific needs.
  • Serve as a point-of-contact for degree support and enhancement activities that extend/augment the educational opportunities associated with engineering undergraduate degree programs.
