Academic Hospital Medicine Fellowship
Started in 2021, The UC San Diego Hospital Medicine fellowship is a one or two year, non ACGME program, that integrates a robust medical education curriculum, mentorship and scholarship, with opportunity for leadership skill growth within clinical operations and business administration.
Mission
To advance the knowledge and skills for a successful well-rounded career in academic hospital medicine.
Brief Program Overview:
A multifaceted approach is used to develop learners' clinical reasoning, teaching, and research skills via core and elective rotations, teaching opportunities, frequent didactic sessions, research, and structured mentorship. All clinical rotations will be held at UCSD Hillcrest and UCSD Jacobs Medical Centers.

Leadership
• Participate in BEAM (Business and Entrepreneurship Acumen in Medicine) course offered by UCSD and Rady School of Management
• Join operational committees at the department and hospital level
Mentorship
• Structured quarterly mentorship meetings with faculty advisor in various areas of research and medical education
• Opportunity to be a mentor to medical students and residents
Clinical Work
• 0.5 clinical FTE with approximately 8 weeks as an inpatient ward attending, including trainee supervision. Small mix of admitting and night shifts (flexible schedule allowed)
• Opportunity for elective rotations in palliative care and transplant
• POCUS training opportunity

- Opportunity to work with medical students and residents in various learning settings
- Training through Stanford Faculty Development Series, Academic Hospitalist Academy, UCSD FACE (Faculty and Fellows as Clinician Educators) UCSD and peer to peer feedback
- Longitudinal didactic curriculum on high yield topics
Scholarship and Quality Improvement
- Strengthen skills in clinical research techniques and data analysis through select courses in the UCSD CREST program
- Design and lead quality improvement projects of clinical relevance
Business Administration
- Option to apply and if accepted, complete an executive MBA degree via UCSD Rady School of Management (extends duration of fellowship to two years) with subsidized tuition
