Work schedule will be Monday-Friday for up to 20 hours per week during normal business hours. Business hours are Monday - Friday 8:30 am to 5 pm. Some evening hours may be needed during peak enrollment periods in January, August and December.

General Description:

Assist at risk students with academic, career, and life planning through one on one and group advising. Lead workshops, present in classes, provide on demand walk-in support, and contribute to division programs as needed.

Duties and Tasks:
  • Advise students on academic probation and warning through appointments, group sessions and during walk-in shifts.
  • Maintain continues awareness of most current information related to program advising, transfer guidance, college policies, and procedures.
  • Facilitate workshops and programs on academic success strategies.
  • Assist with Student Services programs as needed.
  • Direct interactions with high-need, high-risk student population.
  • Conduct appointment based and small group sessions around academic life management, academic planning, special population insights, and problem solving.
  • Make appropriate referrals to both college resources and community resources for mental and emotional wellness, as well as financial sustainability.
  • Conduct strategic outreach through Navigate and SIS systems to ensure relationship development and student-centered connections.
  • Effectively serve students placed on academic probation and/or warning and students with complicated transfer in and out of NOVA profiles.
  • Provide general advising support during peak periods of enrollment to a diverse range of students including adult learners, veterans, ESL learners and any special populations the college determines needs high touch advising support.
  • Use technology to supplement an intrusive advising approach for these special populations and facilitate a culture of care and relationship rich education.
  • Collaborate with faculty to manage complex student matters.
  • Participate in walk in general advising as needed during peak periods.
  • Provide programming and training, including ongoing student support programming.
  • Assist with programs sponsored by advising, OWMH (Office of Wellness and Mental Health); ORA (Outreach, Recruitment & Admissions).
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Required KSAs:
  • Skills in educational and career counseling, academic advising, support of diverse student populations in navigating the comprehensive higher education experience.
  • Ability to initiate program development, planning, and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of college degree plans, transfer agreements, interpreting placement test scores, college level study skills, campus services and resources for students.
  • Ability to analyze transfer and progression requirements and engage in student support to help them reach educational goals.




Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience with training and/or education in academic advising, educational counseling, human services, or related field serving a high need population.
  • Experience with presenting to small and large groups effectively
  • Experience in a higher education setting.
