Description
This position provides necessary technical and supervisory assistance in numerous teaching laboratory settings. Provides support as necessary to ensure high quality Academic Performance and instruction within the Department of Biological Sciences. These duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Responsible for Academic Laboratories. Receive, distribute, and/or store supplies and equipment used in classrooms.
• Clean, decontaminate, and store laboratory glassware and other equipment.
• Operate departmental autoclave and other specialized equipment as needed.
• Perform minor repair of equipment, models, and displays.
• Check calibrations on commonly used equipment.
• Preparation of basic and commonly used reagents, solutions, and media including sterilization, for laboratory use as needed.
• Maintain stocks of sterile microbiological and molecular supplies (such as flasks, tips, and tubes).
• Construction of basic laboratory apparatus and/or teaching aids.
• Provide technical assistance and support to the Zoology, Ecology, and Botany facilities including field and laboratory equipment and maintain both living and preserved specimens. Coordinate and/or instruct lab courses as needed.
• Serve as Chemical Hygiene and Bio-safety Officer for department.
• Train and supervision of student workers in laboratory organization and preparation.
• Maintain up-to-date training and knowledge pertinent to the duties essential to the position.
• Purchase perishable and consumable laboratory supplies from local vendors.
• Occasionally assist or perform clerical/support staff in their duties in the biology office as needed.
• Maintain and update an inventory of all department equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree with a strong background or interest in laboratory science preferred.
• Basic mechanical repair experience; basic familiarity in the use, set-up, and maintenance of computer equipment.
• Basic understanding of common laboratory safety procedure
• Familiarity with most commonly used biology laboratory instruments.
• Familiarity or experience working with microorganisms.
• Mechanical ability and physical ability to perform labor tasks.
• Ability to work well with minimal supervision is needed.
• Self-motivation to gain needed knowledge and necessary training.
• Ability to work with faculty, clerical/support staff, and other people at the university.
• Operation of department vehicles as required.
