Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in managing data within a Lab Information Management System (LIMS), Poultry experience, 2+ years lab experience; Bachelor of Science. Excellent communication skills are imperative.

Position Summary

This position is based in the diagnostic lab at the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center (PDRC). The main responsibilities will be to manage accession and necropsy floor activities as well as to assist the clinical veterinarian on duty with necropsy procedures. This individual will also be expected to occasionally perform laboratory technical professional duties: perform preventative maintenance on automated equipment; contribute to the overall productivity of the lab personnel by managing serological/general lab supply inventory, reviewing cases, and maintaining files. Customer service and client interation are an important aspect overlapping all of these duties

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Manage Necropsy floor activities, including scheduling of access for educational or technical sessions, cleaning, disinfection and adherence to as well as continuous improvement of biosafety protocols.
  • Assists the clinical veterinary team in conducting necropsy examination on poultry species, sample collection and test submission.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Manage sample receipt and data entry (accession) into the current Lab information Management system (LIMs).
  • Accession encompasses customer service, sample receipt and data entry. Samples may be mailed in and physically delivered to the poultry diagnostic and research center's diagnostic lab and also include live and dead poultry species delivered for necropsy examination.
  • Review cases for accurate data entry of submission information, and maintenance of files.
  • Verify the correct testing was performed on accessioned samples. Accurate data entry is critical to be able to generate reports from the LIMS system and to be able to mine data in the system.
  • Work with individual labs to establish work flows of samples.
  • Provide support in a timely manner to domestic and international clients, via phone or email, with issues on current submissions and data provided.
  • Review cases for accurate transcription of submission information, and maintain files. Report results to clientele.
  • Assemble completed lab reports and review all case types to be made into sales orders.
  • Maintain a well-documented log of sample possession throughout the accession section.

  • Provide customer service; interaction and communication with clients, including poultry industry representatives, poultry and small animal veterinarians, UGA staff and faculty.

  • Perform day to day lab activities including reporting, filing, case review, maintaining lab supplies, cleanliness, scheduling, lab organization and lab safety.
  • Supervision of student workers and federal work study students.
  • Training of student and temporary lab workers in co-ordination with lab management.

  • Manage and perform laboratory/bench work involving accessioning, sample storage, serology and/or bacteriology.
  • Perform all assays according to SOPs and enter results into the current LIM system
  • Follow positive assays with correct confirmatory testing.
  • Perform all testing with precision and accuracy.
  • Reproduce all testing with minimal variability when necessary.
