JOB DESCRIPTION:
The ABS monitor is primarily responsible for implementing approved behavioral management strategies to ensure safe transportation of students with disabilities to and from school/facilities outside of the District boundaries. A special education behavioral support monitor is responsible for being at work on time every day, establishing positive relationships with students and parents, as well as, following all District Transportation Protocols.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Encourage students to exhibit positive behavior through the use of Positive Behavior Supports and reinforcement techniques and model appropriate ways to do so.

  2. Assist students with behavioral needs who may require physical guidance and prompting, physical restraint, or other strategies used in non-violent crisis intervention.

  3. Work with District staff to determine effective strategies for fading assistance while maintaining behavioral success.

  4. Assist with the safe transportation of students to and from school.

  5. Assist students in loading and unloading the bus.

  6. Comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) to ensure the confidentiality of student records are maintained.

  7. Maintain accurate time checks and student counts as required.

  8. Monitor on District vehicle for extracurricular activities as needed.

  9. Maintain appropriate student management environment, be familiar with and follow student Behavior Intervention Plan, document and report inappropriate and unacceptable behavior to designated as directed.

  10. Recognize and report evidence of abuse and/or neglect in accordance with District Policy.

  11. Communicate with the schools, public, and students in such a manner as to encourage their cooperation and respect.

  12. Use First Aide/Bio-Kit as required.

  13. Provide emergency assistance to special needs students as needed.

  14. Identify by name all of the students who ride the District vehicle.

  15. Assist in maintaining up-to-date seating charts for all assigned runs.

  16. Assist the driver with route directions and student management.

  17. Demonstrate vehicle evacuation to students as needed.

  18. Evacuate the vehicle from any emergency exit safely and in a timely manner.

  19. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, and student injuries, and complete required reports as needed.

  20. Be aware of all students' disabilities and special needs.

  21. Report any medical problems experienced by the students while being transported, to a campus administrator and your supervisor and make written reports as appropriate.

  22. Physically access and operate all emergency equipment and emergency exits, including front, rear, and side emergency doors, roof hatches, and emergency windows.

  23. Assist passengers regardless of location in the vehicle.

  24. Pass randomly administered drug and alcohol tests. (A refusal for drug and or alcohol test will be considered an automatic positive).

  25. Regular attendance.

  26. Maintain confidentiality.

  27. Other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
  • CPI Certification (must obtain within 30 days of employment)
  • CPR Certification (must obtain within 30 days of employment)

Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Demonstrate ability to prevent and de-escalate disruptive student behavior
  • Demonstrate ability to intervene to prevent potentially dangerous behavior
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment on District buses in a safe and effective manner
  • Capable of assessing situations in emergencies and quickly reacting with necessary measures for the protection and well-being of all CISD children
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all students, parents, and school personnel
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to manage students with behavioral disabilities in a safe and appropriate transportation environment
  • Ability to work well with all children, young adults and parents
CONTACT INFORMATION:
EQUIPMENT USED: A wide variety of adaptive equipment is used to accommodate special needs students to include wheel chairs, wheel chair lifts, fire blanket, safety vests, car seats, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs, and seat belt cutter), fire extinguisher, radio, etc. It is necessary for Monitors to be familiar with the design and operating procedures of this special equipment, as well as, knowing how to conduct equipment inspections and make simple "field adjustments" during breakdowns to include wheelchairs, wheelchair lifts.Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environment Factors:
  • Possess mental maturity and emotional stability to operate vehicle safely with distractions from sometimes loud and boisterous students
  • May be exposed to bodily fluids and other contagions
  • Maintain emotional control under stress
  • Occasional District travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours
  • Walking - move about on foot
  • Carrying - transporting an object by hand
  • Crouching - bending the body downward and forward by bending the knees and spine
  • Climbing - ascending and descending the stairs
  • Lifting - able to lift 25 - 40 lbs.
  • Kneeling - bending legs at the knees to come to rest on the knees
  • Pulling - able to exert force upon an object so the object moves toward the force (including jerking)
  • Pushing - exerting force upon an object so the object moves away from the force
  • Reaching - ability to extend hands and arms in any direction
  • Bending - ability to move at the waist downward and upward with reasonable mobility
  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions and fluctuations in temperature
