Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Office of Laboratory Services provides high quality veterinary diagnostic laboratory services to Virginia livestock producers and animal industries and is seeking an individual to serve as Administrative and Laboratory Support Assistant at the Warrenton Regional Animal Health Laboratory location. Daily duties include entering submissions into the laboratory database system, interacting with clients submitting samples in person and via phone and email, placing orders, processing and distributing delivered supplies, and filing completed cases. Other duties include collecting of fees, depositing funds, purchasing equipment, reviewing travel documentation, preparing referral forms, maintaining files and records, properly handling and processing laboratory samples, maintaining client information and confidentiality, and utilizing various computer software.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience in a similar position requiring office management, data entry, and strong customer service duties; additional coursework or experience in business administration; familiarity with laboratory, veterinarian or medical terminology and procedures; understanding of agricultural practices; proficiency in using various computer software; and knowledge of state policies regarding standard business/financial practices. Ability to communicate effectively with the public and to work with fellow employees in a professional and courteous manner; engage in teamwork to solve problems and communicate solutions; quickly and accurately enter data; interpret and follow policies and procedures; organize and purchase supplies and equipment; and exceptional skill in database management. Effective analytical and organizational skills, exceptional customer service, and excellent English oral and written communication skills with proper use of grammar and punctuation will be needed.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of business administration. Current/recent experience working in a position that involves data entry and extensive customer service.

Special Instructions

Exposure to Rabies virus is a possibility in this position and prophylactic Rabies vaccination or check for protective titers will be required as a condition of employment due to the handling of animal specimens.
