This position is open only to:

(1) Current Montgomery County Government employees;

(2) Montgomery County employees who were affected by reduction-in-force and currently have RIF priority rights;

(3) Active Montgomery County local fire and rescue department volunteers with at least 50 points under the length of service award program (LOSAP)

Montgomery County's Office of Consumer Protection ("OCP") is responsible for enforcing consumer protection laws (Chapter 11 of the Montgomery County code) which prohibit unfair and deceptive business acts to ensure a fair marketplace for consumers and businesses. OCP also licenses and registers specific business activities.

Who We Are Seeking

OCP is seeking an Administrative Specialist I who will provide high-level administrative support to OCP's Business Education and Registration Unit. The primary duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Processing and reviewing OCP registration and licensing applications, researching applications to ensure compliance with appropriate State, Federal, and County laws, contacting applicants to discuss application status, and issuing certificates of registration.
  • Researching County merchants and vendors to determine compliance with applicable laws.
  • Collecting, processing, and reconciling registration and licensing fees and other revenues to ensure accurate and prompt depositing.
  • Assisting the Department's management with data collection and other operational matters.
  • Processing expenditures of accounts using the County's ERP system.
  • Creating PowerPoint presentations for outreach and educational events.
  • Providing front office coverage as needed to ensure a properly staffed and operating front office.

The ideal candidate is technologically savvy and has an advanced competency and understanding of modern office technology and software. The ideal candidate will be able to independently research and investigate businesses and individuals for violations of a federal/state/county law. The ideal candidate will be a problem solver and has experience resolving problems and issues before they become larger and more complex.

Additional Information

This is a telework eligible position with a mandatory three workdays onsite.

This position requires the ability to attend meetings or perform work at locations outside the office.

Education : Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree

Experience : One (1) year of professional administrative experience related to research, data management, creating and presenting presentations, and providing front facing customer service.

Equivalency :

1. EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

2. EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Additional administrative, business, research and/or clerical experience will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

  • A commitment to providing excellent customer service. Experience providing efficient and effective customer service, including responding to inquires both written and orally.
  • Advanced and proficient use and understanding of modern office equipment and software (example: advanced expertise with Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, Teams).
  • Experience performing detailed research and effectively explaining findings both written and orally.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing data and statistics.
  • Experience identifying issues and proposing solutions.
