Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider Post-Graduate Training Program Overview

The Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship Post-Graduate Training Program is an intensive, one-year clinical training program for physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses seeking specialized training in emergency medicine. Both new graduates and experienced clinicians may apply. Only completed applications will be considered .

Education and Experience

Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant Program and certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Texas Physician Assistant License

OR

Master's degree in nursing as a nurse practitioner from an accredited Advanced Practice Education Program. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner. Texas State RN license and APRN license with prescriptive authority authorization. Maintains current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association
  • Must have your TX license by March 15, 2025.
  • One year emergency medicine and/or ICU experience preferred .
APPLICATION PROCESS

1. Personal statement (explanation of why you wish to pursue the fellowship)

2. CV/Resume

3. List of clinical rotation sites, preceptors, responsibilities, and hours (if less than 3 years of experience)

4. Unofficial transcript with GPA from advanced practice graduate program

5. Copies of advanced practice certification and state licensure (may defer if not yet obtained)

6. Three letters of recommendation. One should come from an advanced practice program director and the other should be from a manager, preceptor, or advisor with knowledge of your clinical experience.

  • November Candidate notification
  • Fellowship begins (mid-June 2025)
  • First clinical shift Monday, July 7

Job Duties

  1. Conducts and documents comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status.
  2. Synthesizes data and utilizes evidence to develop, implement, and evaluate the patient plan of care, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies/results.
  3. Demonstrates proficiency in technical/procedural skills, as appropriate based on specialty and training.
  4. Provides relevant management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families and caregivers related to current care and preventive health measures.
  5. Facilitates/participates in quality related initiatives through planned group processes, workshops, seminars, and staff meetings, to improve clinical and system practice performance.
  6. Collaborates in research projects and protocols; and routinely applies evidence based best practices to patient care.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to maintain current customer service, clinical, and technical skills.
  • Ability to identify opportunities and provide suggestions for improvements in departmental policy, procedures, and protocols.
  • Proficient use of EMR in the delivery of care
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed primarily in a clinical environment. The incumbent may be exposed to body fluids and infectious diseases.
  • Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimums require prior approval of Vice President for Human Resources Administration or his/her designee.
