The Advising Office in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Hybrid) Advising Specialist.

About the Opportunity

This position will provide academic advising to students transferring into the Eberly College. The Advising Specialist will provide academic advising and teaching to students who are in academic difficulty and create or support programming at the college level for advisers, students and other stakeholders to enhance the quality of advising and student support.

What You'll Do

Advising and Related Programming

  • Develop academic advising to students who are transferring into the Arts & Sciences. Responsibilities will include:

    • Analyze prior transcripts and apply coursework to degree audit.
    • Identify and communicate missing or needed requirements for timely progression through intended major.
    • Onboard students into their intended majors by establishing departmental connections with the student and the intended adviser.
  • Provide advising and counseling to students who are probationary, on deferred suspension or who have been reinstated after suspension as needed.
  • Lead development of transfer initiatives for Eberly College of Arts & Science

    • Create academic connections between major coursework and transfer student needs (benchmarking, admission to the major criteria, bottlenecks for matriculation, etc.)
    • Develop programming that targets transfer students promotes retention and graduation.
    • Liaise with departments to promote a better understanding of transfer student issues and needs.


Teaching

  • Teach ARSC 189 and 201 or other appropriate courses as assigned by Associate Dean.


Research, Outreach and Assessment

  • Review data and prepare reports/presentations/guidance for Undergraduate Director and Dean of Academic Affairs relative to student retention, performance, career preparedness and outreach
  • Develop and support programming for First-Time Transfers and New Student Orientation
  • Develop and support programming for First-Time Transfers and Mid-Year Academy
  • Provide assistance with recruitment events and initiatives in which college participate

    • Maintain awareness of and conduct research pertaining to national standards for student retention
    • Identify and provide timely outreach for struggling students to assist in college/university retention initiatives
  • Actively participate in/developing programming for the training and development of advisers in the College.
  • Actively participate in and/or supervise College committees pertaining to advising and undergraduate performance, including the Undergraduate Studies Advisory Board and Academic Suspension Appeals Committee.

    • Lead and organize suspension appeal process for the college
    • Participate in academic dishonesty hearings
    • Represent college at Academic Advisory Council meetings
    • Participate on Academic Standards Committee
  • Acquire an active knowledge of all the procedures that are part of the Eberly College Undergraduate Studies Office routine: change of major, adding a major or a degree, graduation certification, so as to be able to assist Student Record Officer during graduation periods.


Qualifications

  • Master's degree.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience teaching and advising at the college level.

  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of effective teaching skills.
  • Evidence of effective research skills.
  • Knowledge or ability to acquire knowledge of employer expectations and their relationship to strategic curricular decisions.
  • Knowledge or ability to acquire knowledge of all ECAS departmental admission standards and benchmarks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively and efficiently with students who are on deferred university suspension, or who have been suspended from their academic program.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop programs to support students in academic difficulty.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn to work with Banner, SSC and DegreeWorks, ARGOS, and other reporting/data systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and analyze data.
  • Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills.
