Job Summary:

The Animal Care Technician II will provide high-quality daily care and maintenance of fish used in research within the Zebrafish Facility of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Under the direction of the Zebrafish Facility Manager, this position involves significant and varied technical activities to support the management of aquaculture facilities and laboratory populations of fish. Performs operational, husbandry, and customer service functions and will be responsible for operating multiple recirculating aquaculture systems and ensuring that optimal animal health and productivity are sustained, all in accordance with federal and institutional regulations and policies. Please note, the schedule for the Animal Care Tech II will be 8am-4pm and Tuesday through Saturday.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Feeds populations of fish the proper type and amount of food, depending on life stage and experimental application.
  • Operates and maintains sophisticated recirculating aquaculture systems, aquatics tank washers, and integrated electronic water quality monitoring systems, o serving standard operating procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Performs and records daily animal health and welfare observations, communicating adverse findings to the Facility Manager.
  • Performs daily oversight and operation of aquaculture systems and communicates any problems to the Facility Manager.
  • Performs various husbandry tasks, including tank changes, spawning, and other procedures that involve the handling of fish, including euthanasia
  • Maintains live invertebrate cultures for feeding larval fish.
  • Performs and records all water quality testing.
  • Monitors supply needs and notifies facility manager.
  • Ensures the cleanliness of the facility, adhering to established cleanliness schedules.
  • Upholds facility and regulatory policies.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position equal to two (2) years.


Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be willing and able to successfully pass a 10-panel drug test.
  • Must be willing and able to successfully pass a national criminal background check.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field.
  • 1-2 years of experience working in an aquaculture environment.
  • AALSO Water Quality Technician and Life Support System Operator certifications are an asset.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Work requires the ability to follow detailed instructions pertaining to zebrafish care.
  • Work requires basic computer and record-keeping skills, including database management.
  • Ability to use email, web-based database and purchasing programs and word processing software.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with people from a wide variety of social and educational backgrounds.

Anticipated Salary Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $42,948.00 to $49,826.40.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation depending on the level.
