The Department of Learning Health Sciences (DLHS) has received a $5 million, five-year grant from PCORI and AHRQ to apply innovative methods to improve health, healthcare, and health equity. This grant has allowed us to establish the Michigan Embedded Learning Health System Scientist Training and Research MEL-STaR) center. As part of this grant, we are seeking a motivated and dynamic team member to join us as an Applications Programmer Analyst Intermediate.

The person in this position will build software routines to extract, transform, and load data from diverse data warehouses and provide infrastructural support to operationalize them. This individual will work with the MEL-STaR grant Scholars to ensure availability of data, software packages, and research infrastructure needed for them to conduct their embedded LHS research projects. This position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with our transdisciplinary tenured faculty and clinical and community-affiliated collaborators.

Responsibilities*

The person hired for this position will be expected to:
  • 30% - Assist MEL-STaR grant affiliated scholars and collaborators with accessing data from multiple, diverse sources
  • 30% - Collect and maintain a repository of tools, publications, and other solutions created by MEL-STaR grant affiliated scholars and collaborators
  • 20% - Assist Co-PIs and Co-directors with building reporting, evaluation, and analysis framework for MEL-STaR grant, including e-forms, website inter-connectivity, executive summaries, and presentation slides, and other reports as needed
  • 20% - Create programming; documentation standards; update procedures, forms and policies as needed

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor?s degree with 3+ years or equivalent combined experience in programming or informatics-related projects, ideally working in a large healthcare environment
  • Proficiency in one or more of R, Python, Linux, and Unix environments
  • Familiarity with ML concepts (machine learning, statistics, deep learning)
  • Experience working with protected health information
  • Willingness to learn and quickly adjust to new tools and applications
  • Capable of converting ambiguous problem statements into concrete project requirements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including technical writing and ability to communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand and explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and activities, setting priorities and maintaining deadlines, with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate respect, trust, and integrity in all operational and interpersonal transactions.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Master?s level education in learning health science, computer or information science or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience working with distributed computing infrastructure and/or pipelined architecture for data analysis, federated models, etc.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Additional Information

The position is available immediately and is term-limited, funded for 2-years; the initial appointment may be extended depending on availability of research funds and successful performance in the role. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
