Applications Engineer for Advanced Manufacturing

Knoxville, Tennessee

Employer: Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Industry:
Salary: Competitive
Job type: Full-Time

Requisition Id13621

Overview:

The Manufacturing Systems Analytics (MSA) Group ( https://www.ornl.gov/group/manufacturing-systems-analytics ) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL, https://www.ornl.gov/ ) designs, develops, and deploys sensing and analytics for advanced manufacturing technologies ( https://www.ornl.gov/content/smart-manufacturing ). The MSA Group engages in multidisciplinary, cross-cutting research and comprises staff with expertise spanning mechanical engineering, image and signal processing, materials science, computer vision, data analytics, computer science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

We seek an Application Engineer to support imaging and sensing activities at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF, https://www.ornl.gov/facility/mdf/ ). You will assist with the design and handle the installation of sensor systems for advanced manufacturing systems and maintain sensor calibration and quality across a variety of machines, support the development of new sensor technologies, and help to ensure data integrity for machine learning algorithms. You will play an important role in supporting ORNL's strategic research and development (R&D) activities at the MDF, impacting programs and partners in industry, academia, and other government organizations.

Purpose:

You will be working at ORNL's MDF to help advance manufacturing technologies and facilitate their deployment to industry. The MDF is home to a cohort of additive manufacturing (i.e., 3D printing), machining, and hybrid manufacturing systems that produce complex components with a wide range of materials and sizes. These systems are instrumented and connected to a digital environment to produce and collect digital twins of fabricated components. Information is collected at every step to create terabyte-sized, multi-modal, spatiotemporal datasets to characterize the manufacturing process.

Within this digital environment, you will be responsible for designing and installing new sensor systems, updating and upgrading existing sensor systems, maintaining sensor calibration and quality, supporting the development of new sensor technologies, and ensuring data integrity for machine learning algorithms. The data from these systems will be used to develop analytics algorithms and artificial intelligence techniques to improve manufacturing outcomes. You will be engaged in R&D of software and hardware techniques to explore three areas of interest: (1) real-time sensing and analysis of advanced manufacturing processes; (2) understanding correlations between manufacturing intent, machine behavior, and part quality; and (3) optimization of manufacturing processes. With over 100 systems at the MDF representing a variety of manufacturing technologies, you will have the chance to work on a wide range of projects impacting numerous industries while simultaneously growing your technical skillset and career.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the design and handle the installation of imaging and sensing systems.
  • Maintain and upgrade existing imaging and sensing systems.
  • Develop new sensing techniques and technologies.
  • Calibrate sensors and ensure data integrity for machine learning.
  • Support R&D projects of the MSA Group and across the MDF.
  • Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace- in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:
  • BS/BA degree minimum (MS degree preferred) in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, computer engineering, computer science, or closely related field.
  • Programming experience, preferably in Python.
  • A strong desire to learn new skills and the ability to learn independently.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Desire and ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.
  • At least three of the following:
    • Mechanical design experience using 3D CAD software.
    • Experience with sensor instrumentation, particularly cameras and optics.
    • Experience with microcontrollers and/or robotics.
    • Experience with computer vision techniques.
    • Experience with machine learning and deep learning libraries.
    • Knowledge and/or experience of metal additive manufacturing processes.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
