At Reality Labs Research (RL Research), we have built a world class team of researchers and engineers, working together across a broad range of disciplines from machine perception and artificial intelligence to operating systems and hardware. The Surreal team at RL Research is seeking an exceptional Research Director that can accelerate our mission to build a new class of spatial and contextualized AI, and lay the foundations for a new computing paradigm that is built from the ground to understand the physical world from egocentric devices. Meta is seeking an Applied Research Scientist with expertise in computer vision and machine learning capable of working through all the stages of prototype development. A successful candidate in this role is self-driven, creative and capable of coordinating across a multidisciplinary engineering team to bring a prototype from concept to realization. This person will take initiative and should be willing to execute consistently in an agile, fast-paced environment.

Applied Research Scientist - Reality Labs Research Responsibilities


  • Drive the team's goals and technical direction, tackling new and ambitious research challenges in always-on contextual AI.

  • Build and execute on a long-term vision and strategy for egocentric machine perception capabilities that can inform and provide long- and short-term situational context for AI-enabled devices.

  • Work with cross functional teams to achieve impactful outcomes. This includes product managers, operations teams, data scientists, and product partner teams, and engineering teams.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Research and/or work experience in machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and generative AI.

  • Proven track record of achieving results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at workshops or conferences such as CVPR, ICCV, Neurips or similar.

  • Experience working autonomously, handling concurrent projects where timelines may be ambiguous or changing, and prioritizing by balancing required effort with resulting impact.

  • Experience in Python and C/C++.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Experience with building contextual AI applications, e.g. LLM and VLM.

  • Experiences in 2D/3D perception, including detection, segmentation and tracking.

  • Demonstrated track record of significant contributions to the field, evidenced by first-author and last-author publications at peer-reviewed Robotics, Computer Vision (CV), and AI conferences such as ICRA, IROS, RSS, SIGGRAPH, NeurIPS, CVPR, ECCV, and ICCV.
