Housing is seeking (4) Area Managers to join the already awesome team taking the department to the next level of excellence!

The Area Manager for Residence Life is a twelve-month, managerial, live-off position. The position's primary purposes are to oversee the operations of a residential area, supervise staff in the residential area and provide case management for residential issues and concerns. University Housing has four area manager positions, each of whom directly supervise 2-3 full-time professional staff and oversee a residential area of 1000-2000 residents with 75+ student staff. Full-time professional staff include Residence Hall Directors and Assistant Hall Directors. The Area Manager for Residence Life serves in an on-call rotation and reports to the Assistant Director for their respective residential area.

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

Administration

  • Oversee operations for an area of campus ranging from approximately 1,000 to 1,800 students
  • Implement staff development, selection, training and evaluation activities, programs, and processes
  • Assist residential hall staff with interpretation and implementation of Community Living Guide and Student Code of Conduct policies and procedures
  • Respond to customer service needs and concerns, resolve issues, answer questions, and clarify policy
  • Manage area programming and operational budgets
  • Participate in a 24 hour on call rotation and respond to and address emergency situations and incidents
  • Collaborate with departmental colleagues and other campus units (as appropriate)
  • Communicate and maintain relationships with custodial and maintenance staff regarding facility issues; follow-up on facility issues to ensure completion of work orders and building repairs
  • Participate in departmental and university committees as assigned
  • Review and monitor area budget expenditures
  • Serve as a go to person in the absence of the Assistant Director for Residence Life


Safety and Security and Customer Service

  • Manages emergency situations and incidents involving residential students and guests, including accompanying students to the hospital and communicating with emergency contacts
  • Serves as the first point of contact for professional staff on duty (particularly after hours and on weekends) in responding to maintenance, crisis, and emergency situations involving students living within University housing
  • Manages customer service issues, answers questions, and clarifies policies and procedures
  • Manages the student move-in and move-out processes for residence halls/apartments in their areas
  • Assists staff and students with managing and resolving emergencies, customer service and personnel issues in their assigned buildings, desks, and mailrooms
  • Ensure staff and students are adhering to safety, security, and emergency policies and procedures


Staff Supervision, Selection, Training, and Development

  • Supervises, trains, develops, and evaluates direct reports (residence hall directors)
  • Interprets and enforces Community Living Guide and Student Code of Conduct policies, Housing and Panther Meal Contract, and procedures for staff
  • Communicates regularly with full-time staff through meetings, one-on-ones, and email
  • Assist with recruitment, selection, placement, evaluation and personnel administration of residence life staff
  • Advise RHDs on matters and issues pertaining to their assigned residential community
  • Participate in departmental/divisional trainings, development, committees, programs, events, and activities including signature programs, PAC3, Panther LEAP
  • Hold regular one-on-one meetings with direct reports and occasional one-on-one meetings with indirect reports


Community Development

  • Designs, implements, and evaluates area-wide programs and activities in residential areas
  • Supports the academic mission of the University, the co-curricular learning goals and student engagement activities of the Division of Student Success and the University Housing Residential Curriculum
  • Collaborates with the Dean of Students Office, Counseling and Testing Center, Georgia State University Police, and other departments and units on campus in designing and implementing educational and social programs and services for students
  • Serves as a University Complainant, as requested, in judicial board hearings involving residential students. The Student Code of Conduct affords students due process, which involves having the opportunity to ask questions to a complainant
  • Work with residential life staff and students to foster safe, supportive and inclusive residential communities
  • Assist the residential life staff with comprehending and utilizing the residential curriculum
  • Assist the residential life staff with assessment and evaluation of program and learning outcomes
  • Consult with RHDs about students of concern and on student conduct within the residence hall community; ensure that appropriate post-crisis referrals and follow-up are completed with students and staff within 24-48 hours after initial notification
  • Develop campus connections to broaden resourcefulness, skills, and abilities


Reporting:

The Area Manager reports to the Assistant Director for the area. The Area Manager for Residence Life is a twelve-month, managerial, live-off position. Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check.

Qualifications:

Minimum Hiring Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and two years of supervisory/management experience; or a combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in College Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education, or closely related field is preferred and 2-3 years' full-time post-master's degree experience in residential student housing experience in a University setting.
  • Experience working closely with students from diverse backgrounds in a higher education setting.
  • Experience dealing with sensitive and confidential issues
  • Experience supervising para-professional staff
    • Experience with residential curriculum models
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective student/staff relationships
    • Knowledge and familiarity with academic advising or intervention strategies
    • Knowledge and skill in supervisory practices and techniques
    • Knowledge of counseling, conflict management and crisis intervention strategies
    • Experience supervising entry-level professionals
    • Experience implementing student learning and program outcomes assessment
