Position Summary:
As a valued member of the Suburban healthcare team, the Art Therapist uses active art creation, creative techniques, psychological principles, and a deep understanding of human experiences within a therapeutic relationship to support patients in achieving their treatment goals. Through Art Therapy, they help patients and families express emotions, enhance cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, promote emotional resilience, and improve insight while reducing conflicts and distress. Art Therapists provide culturally sensitive and developmentally appropriate therapy within the healthcare setting, collaborating with other healthcare professionals to tailor sessions to individual patient needs. In this collaborative approach, Art Therapists contribute to patients' well-being and support their journey towards recovery and healing.

Responsibilities and Tasks
- Practice Art Therapy in accordance with Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists guidelines.
- Deliver comprehensive Art Therapy services to address psychological, cognitive, emotional, and social needs of patients and families, as directed by the healthcare team.
- Conduct individual, group, and family Art Therapy sessions, establishing both short-term and long-term goals based on assessments and continuous observation.
- Maintain detailed and timely documentation of Art Therapy sessions in patient charts, including assessments and progress notes.
- Collaborate effectively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to inform clinical care planning and address issues arising from art therapy sessions.
Qualifications and Education
- Possession of a Master's degree in Art Education with a strong focus on Group Therapy modalities and theoretical knowledge is essential.
- A minimum of two years of valuable experience in a mental health care setting, showcasing a deep understanding of patient needs and challenges.
- Demonstrated proficiency in leading and facilitating group therapy sessions, emphasizing the ability to create a supportive and constructive therapeutic environment.
- Completion of CPR certification within the first six months of employment, ensuring preparedness for any unforeseen medical emergencies.
- Licensure as an LGPAT (Licensed Graduate Professional Art Therapist) or LCPAT (Licensed Clinical Professional Art Therapist), indicating a high level of professional competence and adherence to ethical standards in the field.
