The UNC Charlotte College of Arts + Architecture is a community of visual & performing artists and design professionals who work in both intellectual and material practices. Through education, expertise, and leadership the College models excellence in teaching, scholarly and creative research, and performance in five creative disciplines: architecture, art and art history, dance, music, and theatre. Primary Purpose of Position
The Arts Education Specialist is a joint appointment in the College of Arts + Architecture (75%) and the College of Education (25%). The Arts Education Specialist holds a full-time, 12-month administrative appointment and is responsible for providing support for college-wide advising procedures in the Arts Education disciplines. The position primarily reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (CoA+A), however, the individual also reports (as needed) to the Associate Dean in the Cato COED .
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The primary duties involve coordinating and providing leadership and administrative support to the Arts Education programs housed within the College of Arts + Architecture and serving as a liaison to the Cato College of Education with responsibilities in the areas of: a) Arts Education advising; b) Arts Education data, records, and assessment management, tracking and reporting; c) Arts Education recruitment and admissions; and, d) support with field placements and student teaching. The Arts Education Specialist works in collaboration with: the CoA+A Dean's Office (specifically the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs); the CoA+A Director of Academic Advising and Assessment; the CoA+A Arts Department faculty and staff; the COED Office of Teacher Education, Advising and Licensure ( TEAL ); the COED Office of School and Community Partnerships ( OSCP ); the COED Teacher Recruiter; UNC Charlotte Admissions Office; Graduate School; and Academic Services Offices, among others.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • This position requires a minimum of a master's degree. Of the candidate's undergraduate and graduate credentials, one must be a K-12 education degree; a fine or performing arts degree is preferred as the candidate's other degree.
  • Demonstrated experience as an advisor in fine and/or performing arts education in a college/university setting and the use of assessment data to assist with educational decision-making are also preferred.
  • Background experience or formal training in one or more of the following: statistics and evaluation methods and/or educational leadership, is beneficial.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Preferred skills and background also include strong communication-oral, written, and meeting/facilitation-capabilities; a demonstrated understanding of the University's and State's Education (NC Dept. of Public Instruction) Teacher Licensure and Arts Education programs; the University's Admissions program.
  • Must be able to relate respectfully and supportively to a wide range of students and work collaboratively with academic unit advisors/faculty/staff and CoA+A/ COED /University Education, Advising, Admissions offices, and personnel.
  • Must be able to maintain accuracy in detailed data collection processes.
  • Candidates with professional work experience in North Carolina in two or more of the following areas are preferred: public schools(s), community college and/or university campuses, teacher recruitment activities, and teacher licensure activities.
  • Technical skills required include demonstrated ability with the following: Banner, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), Gmail, and advising software.
