ASL Lab Coordinator

The Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, (UTK) invites applications for our ASL Lab Coordinator position. We are seeking candidates who can contribute in meaningful ways to the mission and goals of the Department and University.

The Department

The Department of Theory and Practice in Education includes 2 research professors, 24 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 15 clinical-track, and 6 lecture-track faculty. The department provides undergraduate majors in education and audiology and speech pathology, deaf studies, and special education with multiple minors offered. The graduate programs offered are a Master of Science with 12 concentrations, an EdS, or Specialist in Education, and a PhD with three concentrations and several specializations. The mission of TPTE is to benefit local, regional, national, and global communities by conducting research, preparing teachers, and engaging in outreach.

The Position

The Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education (TPTE) is seeking a full-time ASL Lab Coordinator. This position will be responsible for coordinating the activities of the ASL (American Sign Language) lab. Responsibilities will include: coordinate the Lab staffing schedule; update and maintain ASL Lab assignments; provide tutoring and assignment support to students enrolled in ASL courses and current Deaf Studies majors; maintain lab attendance data; maintain/control the lab space and equipment; and other duties related to ASL lab. This position will receive and coordinate requests for interpreting services for the Deaf Studies Team. Create/Edit ASL Videos by the faculty members.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications: High school diploma or GED with experience in providing feedback and mentoring students in American sign language. Near Native to Native American Sign Language user and knowledgeable in the field of ASL and Deaf Culture. Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to work comfortably in an academic setting with diverse populations. Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Docs/Google Drive. Knowledge of LMS platforms.

Preferred qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Culture, or Deaf Education. Prefer individual with BS or currently working toward obtaining their degree. Familiarity with Canvas. Knowledgeable of software and tools to create/edit videos.
