The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is currently seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Academic Coordinator. This position is a 9-12 month postgraduate internship aimed at providing aspiring professionals in the field of academic services for student-athletes with the necessary experience and skills for full-time positions in the future. This position will be provided with mentorship and elevated experiences that are equivalent with those of a full-time staff member.

As an Assistant Academic Coordinator, your primary responsibility will be to support student-athletes across an assigned sport program in their academic pursuits. This includes learning and applying the rules and regulations set forth by the NCAA, ACC, and the University of Virginia regarding the continuing eligibility of student-athletes.

Additionally, you will be responsible for developing individual academic plans for students, assisting them with course selection, guiding them through registration procedures, ensuring they meet degree requirements, and helping them with career planning. You will also provide academic support and advising in other areas related to academic performance and overall student development for the team you are assigned to.

Throughout the internship, you will gain valuable experience and knowledge in the field of academic services and student-athlete development. This will prepare you for potential full-time positions in the future, equipping you with the necessary skills to effectively support student-athletes in their academic endeavors and overall personal development.

Other duties include, but not limited to:
  • Provide academic support to a caseload of student-athletes, including but not limited to, weekly meetings with at-risk student-athletes, course registration, major selection, schedule audits, NCAA certifications, etc.
  • Support the overall student-athlete experience by providing advanced support around student-athlete development, including career growth, academics, community engagement, leadership development, and personal development.
  • Engage in collaborative problem-solving and decision-making as part of a team
  • Comply with all NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) and ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) rules and regulations as well as the UVA Honor Code guidelines
  • Assist with diligent monitoring of athletic eligibility and academic progress by utilizing grade reports and maintaining detailed and accurate files
  • Assist with the recruitment process of prospective student-athletes
  • Support the use and development of the UVA Athletics Pathways program
  • Assist in implementing Academic Affairs signature programs (i.e., New Student-Athlete orientation, international food night, etc.)
  • Schedule may include nights and weekends based on programming and student need
  • Other duties as assigned.
Compensation: $15.37/hr

This position is 40/hours a week for a 9-month term.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree, or currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program; experience working in athletic academic advising is preferred.

Experience: Experience with teaching, advising, tutoring, or mentoring. Volunteer experience and experience as a student will be considered.

Licensure: None

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
