About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The focus for the position of assistant athletic trainer is to promote and protect the health and well-being for intercollegiate student-athletes.

The function of an athletic trainer is to provide services that address the education, prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

The assistant athletic trainer will have duties and responsibilities that support and provide care to all Division-1 varsity student-athletes with an emphasis on the rowing program.

Additional sport / administrative duties may be assigned /determined by the Associate Athletic Director of Student Health and Well-being.

The role of the assistant athletic trainer will play a vital role in supporting the mission and values of the SMU Athletic Department. While working within the scope of state and national regulations and guidelines, the athletic trainer will also provide significant contributions towards safety and risk management.

Essential Functions:
  • Education, prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
  • Medical record keeping, documentation, and injury tracking / monitoring
  • Various administrative duties to support the operations of the sports medicine program.
  • Traveling with respective teams to provide care and support while on the road for competition.
  • Position requires working weekends to provide coverage for competitions and practices. The athletics schedule is ever changing and as a result candidate must be able to adapt to schedule demands.
  • Position requires traveling with assigned sport to provide coverage for competition. May also need to travel to attend continuing education events.
Education and Experience:

Master's degree is required, preferably in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine.

Previous rowing experience preferred. Division I experience desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability to build relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing, especially through e-mail. A strong customer service orientation is essential.

Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks. A strong focus on attention to detail is essential.

Candidate must demonstrate strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, analyze problems and devise solutions.

Candidate must have a strong basic knowledge Microsoft Office programs i.e. Word and Excel. Must also have the ability to learn and utilize injury documentation and tracking software.

NATA-BOC certification required. Texas license - Athletic Trainer required or eligible.

First Aid, CPR, and AED Certified required.

Additional Certifications preferred, i.e. EMT, Dry Needling, CES, PES, BFR, Graston Technique.
