Position Summary:

This position is under the direct supervision of the Chief of Police. The employee is responsible for assisting the Chief of Police in planning, organizing and directing of all activities of the Police Department. The employee becomes Chief in absence of the Chief of Police. Work involves resolving problems of the highest technical nature when required and participating in the determination and formulation of department policies. Duties include: assisting in planning, staffing, and directing police activities; assisting in coordinating, preparing, and administering the budget for the Police Department; conducting administrative studies of management problems and concerns; developing comprehensive programs designed to effectively correct operational deficiencies; investigating citizen complaints about police personnel conduct and services; and making recommendations on performance ratings, disciplinary actions, and related matters. An Assistant Police Chief represents the department at various meetings and conferences and speaks before community groups.

  • Assist with the development long and short-range objectives and goals for the safety and security of the district
  • Ensure Police and Security Services are rigorously supportive of the goals and objectives of the district
  • Assist with the development of policies, procedures, and deployment plans that are focused on sound Police and Security practices
  • Oversee Police and Security personnel and equipment resources to maximize specific support to campuses and district facilities and minimize expenditures of time and materials to Police and Security Services
  • Collaborate with administrative and campus personnel to ensure security needs of campuses are met through school value
  • Ensure that all criminal offenses that occur within the district are investigated promptly and thoroughly, evidence is collected and preserved, and witness statements are properly documented
  • Respond to district emergency and/or crisis situations
  • Establish liaison with other law enforcement professionals including federal, state, county, and local entities
  • Coordinate and administer daily police activities through subordinates
  • Direct activities of personnel engaged in preparing budget proposals, maintaining police records, and recruiting staff


Qualifications

  • Texas Peace Officer license and a Master Peace Officer certificate issued by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE)
  • Ten years of directly related experience required
  • Five or more years of command level or supervisory experience with a law enforcement agency required
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university preferred
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Knowledge of Federal and state laws
  • Knowledge of all aspects of Police Department operations, including criminal investigations, report writing, and criminal law
  • Strong communication, public relations, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from district personnel, parents, and the general public
  • Successfully completed one of the Police Senior Management Training (FBINA, LEMIT, SMIP)
  • Experience working in a supervisory role in a police department
  • Strong computer software skills, including Word, Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Strong knowledge of and ability to implement modern methods, practices, and principles of police investigation, organization, and administration
