The Department of Housing and residence Life is comprised of a team of professionals committed to creating communities that enhance the academic, personal, and social development of residential students and to providing students with a variety of services and comfortable living environments that are clean, safe, and affordable.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Assistant Director for Leadership and Recognition manages and develops staff and students in assigned buildings/areas, provides departmental leadership in the training and professional development of staff, guides leadership development and recognition programs for staff and residents, and serves as the primary advisor for Leadership Programs that includes the Resident Students Association and National Residence Hall Honorary. The Assistant Director is a member of the department's senior management team and is responsible for providing departmental leadership in crisis situations. The Assistant Director serves as a consultant and a resource to professional and student staff within the department in the areas of student group advising, programming, leadership development, staff training/development, and supervision. This position will be responsible for, working with and assisting the Division of Student Affairs and Housing and Residence Life with gathering research, creating reports and all assessment efforts related to Residence Life. The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Director of Residence Life.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Principal responsibilities include supervision and development of full-time staff; serving as a senior management team member; providing leadership and community development for residential students; overseeing recognition programs for student staff and residents; advising Leadership Program; performing crisis management, overseeing open houses/admitted students day for the residence life unit, and other departmental/campus-wide responsibilities.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master's degree (ideally in higher education, counseling and/or student personnel, or a related field)
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of professional housing (post-masters) experience in housing, student affairs, or a related field.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Experience leading, advising, and/or developing a leadership program, including residence hall government.
  • Experience leading, organizing, and/or involvement with recognition initiatives
  • Experience supervising graduate or professional staff
  • Experience serving in on-call response and/or in crisis management
