POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Director of IACUC is responsible for the administration of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and functions in conjunction with the Assistant Dean Animal Resources. Provides managerial guidance, training, technical assistance, and regulatory guidance to staff within the department, as well as campus-wide to assure operational compliance with IACUC policies and procedures.

This is a hybrid position that will require an onsite presence according to business needs.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

REQUIRED

• Bachelor's Degree in a life science related field.

• Six (6) years of research compliance, administration, and/or animal research experience; demonstrated expertise in animal research regulations.

• Two (2) years in a supervisory capacity required.

PREFERRED

• Experience in an academic setting preferred.

• Certification in IACUC administration preferred.

• Healthcare experience.

JOB DUTIES

• Manage the IACUC program to assure compliance with university and UT System policies, federal regulations, and funding sponsor requirements.

• Develop, implement, and monitor procedures designed to promote compliance with IACUC policies and procedures and integration with other committees, such as the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Chemical Safety Committee (CSC), and offices, such as the Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA), Office of Technology Development, and Legal Affairs.

• Develop and implement training and educational materials (including written materials and website content) and serve as a resource for advice and counsel concerning the interpretation of policies and their application to individual circumstances, and to assist employees with all protocol submission and approval processes. Conduct new Principal Investigator (PI) orientation.

• Manage, train, and evaluate IACUC Office staff to assure timely protocol and amendment submission reviews. Oversee and assure protocol congruency with grants, hazard registrations, and other documents. Assist in the review of more complex, high-risk situations. Manage post-approval activities including facility inspections, program reviews, post-approval monitoring, and compliance reviews. Communicate with departments to provide noncompliance reports and escalate administration as necessary.

• Manage communications from the IACUC Office to the research community.

• Coordinate the planning, development and maintenance of electronic forms and electronic administration systems and reporting tools for the programs.

• Monitor and inform administration of regulatory developments and changes that relate to IACUC functions. Prepare and present reports and information to the IACUC, regulators, and UTSW leadership.

• Liaise with regulatory and accreditation agencies based on direction received by the Assistant Dean Animal Resources.

• Perform other duties as assigned.
