The Campus Rec Assistant Director is responsible to provide and oversee effective operations for respective Campus Recreation administration, programs, and/or facilities. The Assistant Director may provide direction to full-time, part-time, and student workers by supervising tasks, monitoring performance, and ensuring adherence to policies and procedures. They are also responsible for maintaining safety and reducing risk.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Responsible for assisting in the oversight of a team of full and part-time employees to facilitate management of the Liberty Mountain Equestrian Center. Duties include oversight of daily operations, programming, and facility maintenance. Management of staff includes hiring, training, developing, scheduling, and evaluating.

2. Assists the Director in strategic maintenance of horse herd including management, training, riding, and nutrition.

3. Responsible for creating the staff schedule for full and part time employees.

4. Assists the Director and Assistant Directors with event planning including creating of contracts, billing, and logistics.

5. Responsible for opening and/or closing the equestrian center according to established procedures.

6. Assist with instruction of programming including lessons, classes, trail rides, practices, and events.

7. Assists in the maintenance and adherence of risk management procedures and policies, ensuring compliance with university policies.

8. Document and report incidents and injuries during any activities at the equestrian center.

9. Document, track, and report program statistics and objectives progress in the areas of equestrian center revenue, participation, and survey feedback.

10. Make purchases and recommendations for departmental assets or expenses.

11. Frequently oversee and assist with events or operations during evening, nights, or weekend hours.

12. Ability to drive a truck and horse trailer, tractors, and other farm equipment.

13. Remain up to date on industry standards and performance benchmarks and ensure that all equine related programming remains effective and current.

14. Perform all other tasks assigned by the Director to assist in the operation of Campus Recreation facilities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for the supervision of full time, part time, and student employees on shift.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years prior horse experience (ownership, stable employment and/or professional equine experience)
  • Valid driver's license
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid certifications
  • Ability to ride, train and prepare horses for all levels of riders. Experience with collegiate riding, teaching lessons and competing in horse shows. Familiarity with industry standards and practices.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, problem solving ability and attention to detail


Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Equine related field
  • Experience leading a team

  • Frequently required to stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to work in all-weather, including possible inclement outdoor conditions.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and move around the Equestrian Center.
  • Handle horses, equipment and/or materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct operations.
  • Regularly required to lift 50 pounds or fewer


WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is an outdoor setting in all-weather conditions. Work will be performed at variable temperatures and may include exposure to sun and dust. Noise level is generally moderate with occasional higher levels from equipment.

Driving Requirements

Use of one's personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position. Proof of a valid Virginia driver's license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required. The ability to drive a truck and trailer is preferred.
